How To Remove Maf Screen?
I used Google search, and didn't find anything on the first two pages... Anyways, I know some folks have removed the first MAF screen. I opened the airbox while I was doing some Seafoam action today, and I unscrewed the first MAF screen, and air horn assembly. I didn't see any way to get the screen off the airhorn, so I just left it as is.
I'd love to keep the air horn portion, and remove the screen. I'm pretty sure you lose some good velocity without the airhorn on there. So, how does one remove the screen from the airhorn? I saw the tabs on there, but there wasn't anything I saw that I could get under to remove it.
So yeah, any tips?

Remove screws and clips , etc then take a piece of A4 size paper, roll it and use it to poke the screen out. MAKE SURE THE PAPER HITS THE EDGE OF THE MAF SCREEN NOT THE SCREEN ITSELF.

Could you elaborate? I'm not sure I understand.
To RX8Soldier, the reason you would take one out is to reduce intake restrictions. The biggest reason I want to keep the air horn is because it is such a good thing as far as airflow goes. I'm pretty sure the car will do better with the air horn and screen than with both removed.
Yeah, removing the screens will actually cause you more problems than the minutely increased flow would gain you. They straighten out the air flow for stable MAF readings, at all speeds. Removing the screens generates unstable idle and typically a CEL, possibly misfires, etc...
It's why you aren't finding instructions to remove them, because it isn't a good idea.

I'm keeping the screen right before the MAF to straighten airflow. I know the reason behind the screens, but the one up front seems a bit much.
Don't they both get removed when you go aftermarket anyways?

Okay, well I feel like a goofus. I was going to put the airhorn back in, since it should be more beneficial than the screen I wanted out. Opened the airbox, and the MAF screen was sitting in the bottom. Oops. So the one closest to the MAF is gone, and the airhorn is back in. I'll post my thoughts when I go driving later.
The one before the MAF is to make the reading more consistence.
The one behind it is to smooth the air flow into the engine.
Removing each will give you about 1 +/- HP, but you're giving up stable ECU reading and/or driving quality/stability.
This Mazda's intake system is actually really good, so good that Speed Source kept it in their race car. I've been thru OE - K&N both Ver 1 and 2 - Mazdaspeed - and finally back to OE.

Speedsource uses the oem air filter on their GrandAm GT car. They do not use the complete air intake system. It has been several years since they ran a RX8 in ST. I don't remember what was used in that car.

My car had two screens before the MAF. One was right at the tip of the air horn, the other was halfway between the tip and the MAF. So there were two screens in front of the MAF for me. Was it supposed to be setup differently?
Get your hands on the RacingBeat Revi intake installation manual, it shows you how to remove the screen. I suck at English language to properly explain what i meant to say most of the time.
