WTF? It sure does look like a trailer hitch! Jeez...........never seen that before on this car either!
Good luck........you're gonna have to climb under there and see how they attached it. I can't imagine it's welded, but you never know.

I don't get all the hate for having a hitch, I have seen many sports cars at HPDE's towing small trailers with track gear. Towing 200 lbs of tires / tools on a 4x6 trailer would not be a big deal.

There's a different tow hitch (goes under the bumper) that's a Mazda option in the UK. They have a bike rack attachment as well. Sounds pretty practical.

You mean besides it's butt ugly and ruins the look of the car?
I understand the practicality of it, but I'd never do it.

I agree. I see a lot of SOLO guys towing their setup to race events. Better than burning through your expensive R-compounds on your way to a race!

All you can do is determine how the hitch is mounted. Bolted or welded. Then get it removed. Next thing will be to buy a new rear bumper cover and have it painted. Or you could buy the Mazdaspeed rear bumper. That would cover that right up.
Or live with it.

From the section of the RX-8 manual entitled, "Towing:"

"Do NOT tow with your RX-8."

if it just unbolts and you dont want it, you can give it to me. i'll send you the shipping costs.

once you remove it, you can always make the hole into another brake light.

I'm serious!

Everyone should be opening their owner's manuals and looking up towing. It specifically says "DO NOT TOW."

You should just say that if yours is a USA model. In the UK you can get a hitch from the dealer LINK. Click the Transport section in the middle.
