Question How to Fix Exhaust Rattle?

Hey guys my car rattles very loudly when I put my car in reverse the entire rear end and the sunroof shakes like crazy. I believe it is my Borla exhaust resting on the heat shield. The exhaust also shakes when it is in park and it doesn't sound like it is flowing properly or something because of this. Can someone please help me? I have taken it to the dealer and they don't have a clue or haven't bothered to fix it. Could my MAF sensor be dirty, which could be causing the sort of rough idle at start up? It seems fine once I start moving. The car is an 04 AT if that helps. Thanks.

Have you crawled under the car while its running to see if you can pin-point the location?
I've swapped mid-pipes a few times... this past time I installed my cat to get e-checked and now my exhaust rattles too.
I'm willing to bet that something just isn't tight.
Next weekend when I install my dual-resonated mid-pipe, I'll look more closely for the rattle.
But you could always move sections of your exhaust up/down (with gloves) and see if the rattle disappears.
This can help narrow it down.
A dirty MAF sensor would cause a CEL to illuminate... so I doubt its that. Never hurts to clean it with some contact cleaner.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I have watched exhaust shake while the car is running so that is why I think its the heatshield touching the exhaust. Your right though something might be loose. I will check that out and see if that is the cause of the rattle. Thanks.

Do you still have the CAT on? I had a nasty rattle sound, it was from the CAT breaking up and the pieces rattling inside the pipes.

i know when i put my exhaust on at idle and low rpm's it rattled and that's because the one hangar was rubbing against the rear end differential and causing a rattling but once i reved it a little in neutral it would stop...I just bent my bracket a little and stopped all the rattle u really need to get under there with the car running or even not just move the exhaust by hang(shake it like ur hitting bumps etc) and u should b able to pinpoint where the rattle is from

Yes I still have the Cat on. I have never touched it. I had my exhaust installed at an exhaust shop about a year ago and have only started having problems the last few months.

All the hangers seem that they aren't hitting anything, but I can't exactly tell. I haven't checked with the car running though.

I have 39400 miles on the car and they were just replaced about 1000 miles ago. I did install the Mazdaspeed intake a couple hundred miles before the mounts were replaced. The sound the car makes when in reverse or sometimes at idle sounds like pieces of metal coming in contact with each other.

the first run of borlas had a clearance issue.. but that was years ago.. mine is very, very close the the rear shield.. but does not hit..

i would make sure all the hangers are at the lowest point with the exhaust on.. or pull it and look for marks where it touches.. the just in reverse is a bit odd.

I got the Borla brand new almost a year ago. It looks like the hangers are in the right spots, but I am not sure. My first guess was the heat shield. It does look really close and I am still pretty sure that is the cause of my problem.

damn, mine started to rattle yesterday. Put the car into reverse; RATTLE, RATTLE, RATTTLE.....

Accelerate a little bit (pulling out of parking spot) RATTLE, RATTLE, RATTLE.

Hell, I just went outside to get something out of my trunk, closed the trunk (which is quite heavy due to dynamat + MS wing) and RATTLE.

RP supercat + RB exhaust.

jack the back of the car up and crawl underneath(engine off and exhaust cold) move the exhaust by hang (shaking it back and forth and side to side) see if you can hear it when u do that then just try to pinpoint the noise

if you think its the exhaust, you need to check when the car is running or hot. the rubber hanger contracts and actually lifts the exhaust up due to heat.

I feel like a ricer. I pulled out of a parking spot earlier and people looked at me funny.

I'll check it cold and shake the exhaust. If that doesn't do it, I'll drive to NeptuneSpeed and throw it on the lift while she's nice and HOT

I never thought the words "Jedi" and "ricer" would go in the same sentence.

my friend has this problem too. but it's his rear lip that isn't installed properly. so it rattles whenever he's in first at stop. maybe check things out like that. the lower rumble of the exhaust makes parts vibrate all funny so just look around.
haha if you're rear lip/ bumper is falling off then there is definitely gonna be a ratte. hahah my friend.

hey guys, this is actually my 1st post, but i have a similar problem as of the past few days. i have a really bad rattle whenever i make a left turn, i looked under the car and noticed that my heat shield has rusted out around 1 of the bolts holding it in place and i was able to move it pretty easily with my hand so im sure this is what the problem is... i was planning on getting a highflow cat midpipe and rb exhaust but looks like im gonna need to do it sooner than i was planning on cuz i cant stand the rattle.

hey nick, welcome to the club!

you might be able to get the dealership to reweld the heat shield
