How the %&¤$£@ do you remove the generator pulley?
No matter what I try the nut just turns with me... Some advice and help please

 

I assume you have left the thing on the engine with the belt still on?

 

Anyway.....with it still on the car, adjust the belt tension as tight as possible. Using a ring spanner on the pulley nut (as long a one as you can find to increase the leverage), tap the spanner sharply with a mallet.

I'm unsure whether the thing has left or right hand thread, but it should be obvious.

If the pulley spins, you may need a mate to apply further tension on the belt.

you need an impact gun, will knock the nut right off

most tool rental places have a 120V version available

 

It was mostly the part where I could avoid the entire generator to spin with the nut I was after... Ofcourse I already removed the belt and the other pulleys. Is there no way to do it without the belt on?

 

I used a pipe fitters vise grip with a towel between the pulley and the vise grips. Once the vise grap was locked on tight, I backed the nut off with my other hand.

 

Or... as I found being the best for the solution - Air Impact Gun. Takes about 4 seconds to remove the pulley nut and no belt has to be tightened.

old mechanics trick is to whap a leather belt around the pulley then use a pipe wrench to grab her tight, put on your loonngg boxend and wap the H-- out of her. That will do it.

This is the easy way to do it. You don't even need a belt on it!

 

Impact gun, definitely. Spins right off, even using my cheap $50 Pep Boys unit.

 

The problem with an impact gun is that some of them are to long to fit into the tight space, once you put the socket on it.

 

The alternator/generator is only held on by 2 bolts, a belt, and a couple of wires. Take it out.

 

True but aren't you supposed to have the alternator out of the car to remove the pulley?

 

took me a while to figure out how the $%#@#@%$#% electrical plug disconnects, otherwise it's fairly easy to pull the generator out. If you want to leave it in place all you have to do is pull the battery and the upper section of the battery housing out, which happens to be a separate removable piece from the lower tray. Any impact gun should have access to the nut then. I didn't have power or a cordless impact at the present location though, so I had to pull it.
