high pitch wistle @ idle

I have 3000 miles on my 6 spd RX-8 and tonight when my wife and I got back and I pulled it into the garage we both heard a high pich wine from the engine. It sounds like a very high pitch motor but has no fan noise or like the tone you hear when your ears wistle. It never heard this sound before. Did anyone else have this problem before or is it a problem. Hope I am not the only one. thanks

Pull your oil fill cap or dip stick and see if the noise stops. Back in the 70's Mazda had this problem. It was excess vacumm build up and sucking air pass one of the seals. If the hose to the charcole canister would get plugged the engine will not vent and the rotary has no blow by so you get vacumm. The RX8 engineers may not have know about this old problem and this may not be your problem, but it is easy to check.

I think its a sound coming from the throttle body.......

Its noticable all the time, but more with the engine off and the key "ON".

Thanks for the help. I tried the pulling the dipstick when it was running and the high pitch sound did not go away. I also tried turning on the ingnition and heard the sound of the trottle body. The high pitch sound I am hearing is different louder and a little lower in pitch. Last night I let the engine run @ idle and I listened to it. When cold the engine sounds good after it warms up about 5 minutes I began the hear the sound, faint at first and then progreeivly louder. What do youguys thinks. Maybe a vaccume leak. Also it appears to have a ffected the idle it idle lower about 800 rpm and a little ruffer.

If it still makes the sound with the engine shut off, it's the fuel tank venting. The one-way valves sometimes vibrate at high frequencies.

It stops the second the engine is shut off. I took it in to the shop, they could hear it but could not find it. Also I thought my car's PCM was updated to "M" because just after I bought it I gave them a copy of the survice buliton from mazda but it was not updated. When I took it in for the wistle they updated the PCM to "M" and the idle is fine now. Thanks for the help. It appears I am the only one with this problem.

With the engine running, pinch off one of the two large vaccum lines that go to the large air boot between the MAF & the throttle assy. If the noise goes away when you pinch either hose, you have found it. Each one of those hoses runs to either the port air bleed or the metering oil pump air bleed lines. Since both are considered a metered vaccum leak, they make a little noise, but it's pretty much normal.

Before I get blasted for spelling- I did spell vacuum incorrectly!

I have a a video clip that you can clearly hear the noise. I will work on hosting it tonight.
