On my RX-8 I am having a problem with the air mix actuator/temp control. Basically what is happening is the two extremes work (all the way cold, all the way hot), so all of the dealer/Mazda diagnostics come back as "it works correctly". (So I guess I'm lucky that my complaint is my car gets TOO cold w/ the AC on.)

However, if you watch the air mix actuator under the dash it never moves as you move the temp control **** between the extremes (unless you tap it, then sometimes it will move/twitch.)

Anyway, the dealer was able to replicate it after I pointed out the air mix actuator, they worked w/ Mazda tech support to diagnose and order parts. (Unfortunatly they never told me what the part was...)

However, the dealer told me that it may take a few weeks to get in the part. They told me the part was a "restricted" part, and only Mazda themselves could order and ship the part for replacement.

Can anyone explain to me what a "restricted part" is?

Well, I found out what the "restricted part" was. The "heater control module".

[Note: originally they told me it was the whole radio, apparently the guy who called was mistaken.]

So 'er.. what is a heater control module?

 

Why would this be a restricted part?

 

does it maby contain a toxic/controled chemical?
