Hey, anyone know the right way to put tint on your lights ive tried and failed many times seems impossible to do "perfect" just get bubbles like crazy and either have too much solution or too little.

 

Not really the right place for this thread but I'll help anyways. I'm assuming you're trying the vinyl wrap tints? You should use lots of solution on the wrap and light and on the outside as well so you don't scratch it up so much with the scraper. Work it with a heat gun or blow dryer to get the wrap to conform to the contours. Squeegee out as much as you can but if there are small air bubbles after you're done you can always ***** them with a razor blade and squeegee them out. As far as the taillights go I got frustrated after an hour and a half and ripped of the wrap and gave up. Headlights look good tho! haha HTH

Also: search youtube for the rVinyl.com videos they are very helpful.

 

You could also use niteshade on them that works very well. It requires a bit of sanding to get that mirror finish and super glossy but they can look very nice. The only problem is you cant take it back off. :P

^ You just have to make sure you really wanted it tinted or if you change your mind at the last minute, then you'll need to buy new ones, and they are very expensive.

 

it's impossible to do the taillight vinyl tinting perfect unless you've have years of experience doing so. hair dryer, soapy water, and patience does help, and also use bulk film instead of the precut junk for the tails. the headlights are a piece of cake.

 

Headlight tinting isn't too difficult if you have any experience doing vinyl. There are not a lot of complex curves and any bubbles can be worked out pretty easily with a pin.

The rear tail lights are just a pain to cover with vinyl. The only solution is to paint them. I've used the nightshade stuff but I honestly don't suggest it because it fades in sunlight. Within 8 to 10 months my rear tail lights would be back to their non-tinted status.

One point though...if you don't have HID's I would highly suggest installing a conversion kit if you are going to tint your headlights and doing a 5000k or 6000k but no higher temperature than that. You will really reduce your headlight output with tinting. I ended up removing it after nearly biting a guard rail on a mountain run because I couldn't see far ahead.

Your best bet is getting them actually painted. You should be able to find a local paint shop to shoot your tails for $100 and believe me it's worth it. They will look factory and last the life of the car.

 

Excuse my stupidity but aren't all 8's HID? I used the light smoke vinyl from rvinyl.com and I haven't noticed any real difference in light output.

Also I wish some company would just make molded plastic covers for our taillights. I would like to be able to reverse the tint if I get too many tickets.

 

the light smoke is light enough to not make a noticeable difference. still allowing from 85-95% light output.

people typically go for dark tint/smoke (i don't know why) and im sure that's what flashwing is referring to.

 

No base model RX-8's are not HID they are regular halogen. Be careful if you ever order the headlight as this does make a difference. My thought on this is. Buy the base headlight, bake it and remove the new lense, then bake old headlight to remove lense, then replace old lense with new one. Would this work? I know people have taken their headlights apart and painted them this way, but is the lese the same on both lights?

^You mean paint the inside black? Cause it looks awesome. And they aren't "tinted" from a cops perspective. BTW i don't mean spray everything black just the plastic bits/reflectors.

I meant buy a base headlight, replace old lense with new one, etc nonsense.

you can polish the inside of the lense.

 

If it didn't polish out you could do that and for $200 less than one new headlight you would have two brand new ones.

Any company produce a tint for lights that you can hydro dip? I'm sure that would sell really well...

Go to youtube and search hydro dip, water transfer, or hydro graphics to see more vids. Basically you lay the film down in the water, spray the activator and the dip the part. It seamlessly covers the part.
