has there been a resolution to the engine noise

has there been a resolution about the engine noise at 6k and again from 7k on up - the "rattling marbles in a can" sound as it has been discribed. I got the "N" flash about 3wks ago and I still have this sound under hard acceleration.

Any final words on this?

oh, I have always used 93 octane.

If its "normal" than thats fine and I'll live with it, but if it can cause engine damage and/ or loss of HP then I would like to know if anybody knows what it really is and if anybody has had any issues because of this symptom.

I've heard from the intake ports openning up to, detonation, to pre-ignition. I'm just not sure anyone really knows?

Ah........ the wonders of a rotary and the noise they make.

Sure wish someone would start a seminar at Seven stock and the other rallies.

A good learning session on these noises would make us smarter.

Maybe an expert can start a thread and then you can sticky it.

I have the same metallic/grinding sound between 2000 and 3000 RPMs, usually under mild acceleration. I started another thread about this a couple of weeks ago, and 6 or 7 other people heard the same sound. I'm starting to think that it might be a normal sound, although that's just a guess. The next time I have my oil changed I'll ask the dealership to check it out.

silver1.3:

I can't come up with any definitive answer either; I'm still on the "M" flash and notice this myself. (I always use 93 octane as well) I have to wonder if people with the "N" flash who claim miraculous results are experiencing a bit of the placebo effect, so I've been holding off pestering the dealer to get the new flash.

I did notice however, the other day when I had the chance to push the car a bit, (light traffic) the first time I did a WOT run, I got the rattle/noise. A few minutes later, I did another WOT dash, and didn't experience the noise. Perhaps the PCM "learned" something?

well i checked with my dealership and apparently (according to them) the noise under acceleration is normal. which is the only tiem i hear it..when teh engine is winding down in the same rpm range i dont hear it..only under acceleration (under load not in neutral). they also said that in some 8's the noise is louder than others. so i guess take it how you want. i dunno if i'm all that convinced..i mean it was a dealership tha ttold me this. lol and we all knwo how much we can trust them.

My fix for this problem

Well, my fix for this sound at low rpm's is a new engine. Mine is in the shop as we speak getting new injectors and a new engine. They have had my car part of February and almost all of march. They could not fix it. I had to call Mazda Corp. to get someone to work on it. They even had a mazda tech look at it and said they fixed it. Upon picking it up, it immediately did it again. Some tech.

I am in the process of working with Mazda for a buyback or some relief. I have had so many problems with this car, I do not trust it.

This car was not making these noises when I bought it and I was not imagining it.

I think two different noises are being discussed here. Anyway RX8Mama, I truly believe the sound at low RPM is normal, and as far as the dealer fixing it: well, what can I say. Too many dealers don't seem to have a clue about too many details of the RX8.

Kinda like a surgeon who would decapitate somebody in order to cure a headache.

They never could diagnose my problem. I had smoke coming from my engine, I had the sound (almost like bad gas sound) between 2 and 3 rpm's. I have head engineers at Mazda trying to figure it out. I never had this particular sound when I first bought the car.

But the only thing I can equate to the sound was what bad gas sounds like when you buy it. We were running 93 octane in it and it was still doing it.

I think I made enough noise and wrote letters that they decided to replace engine and start anew.

Has anyone ever got a new engine and never had any trouble after that. Or am I gonna be going through this ever 13,000 miles????? I am trying to decide whether or not to keep it or sell it. I luv the car. Nothin like it on the road.

^^hmm i think it was the smoke coming from the engine and less the sound that led to your engine replcement:p

so teh miata tranny makes noises. hmm..interesting. i knew it made sounds (i mean what mechanical part doesn't)..but i think i'm just noticing it a lill more b/c of the work i had doem to my baby. (flywheel clutch and pressure plate replaced). ah well..here's to all of us and are noisey miata trannys:p

I think I have a similar problem. I here a rattle when I lightly acclerate my car and when I lightly press the breaks they squeak and I already had them replace my breaks. I dont know whats up with it now I'm going to take it into the dealer on Monday and see how it goes.

I have the same noise , but it starts at 3500 through the 6000 rpm , and is increasing in the loudness . My thought it is the throw out bearing , ports opening I wouldn't think should make a metal spinning noise . I'm going in in the morning to have it checked. It didn't do this at first , now it just getting worse . It sucks to be driving around with the windows down and hearing that noise coming from my car .......
