hard shutdown

Anyone else notice when they shut off the car a loud clank comes from the engine ?
Maybe clank isn't a good word to describe it, but there is a very noticeable noise..

Not familiar with this clank fortunatly. However I do have a spring like noise during my inital take off. I brought it to the dealer and they said that it was a common problem and that Mazda had issued "Bulleting #4" to correct this issue but it never corrected it. So now they are telling me that it is common and that once my breaks wear in it should go away. Well 2500 miles later and I still have that damn spring noise!!

I think I know the sound you're referring to.

Does the engine make an immediate clank after shut off and then a funny metallic "whirring" sound?

If this is the noise, then mine's been doing it from day one and I have always thought it was normal.

Not here... that would have me worried... mine just whirrs down quietly. Has yours always done that, or just started?

it's one of the s-dais "doors" checking it's position. it wants to be closed the next time you start the car. it cycles to make sure it is. i have a more technical description somewhere that i will post when i get a chance.

bottom line- normal noise. just one of those things the car tests after you shut it off.

Are you sure you are not hearing the throttle plate doing a self test?

It pops open then closed.

Interesting... I'll listen for that on my next shutdown. I've finally gotten used to all the various noises on ignition/startup... this car has a lot of solenoids and switches!

I suspected that it was normal since mine does it pretty much all the time, just wasn't sure what it was.

Now I am enlightened!
