Griot's fluid extractor...a new way to change the oil?

Hello everyone.

Take a look at this: Griot's Hand Pump Oil/Liquid Extractor

In the catalog, it is advertised as a new and effective way to change the oil and other fluids in your car. It looks intriguing and, since it's from/sold by Griot's, I have to believe it has some quality to it.

Currently, I do not have a garage or a set of ramps/lifts to perform my own oil changes in the traditional manner, so this could be a way to go. Checking with Griot's customer service, they state that our RX-8s should be compatible with the system. My only concern is that, while the mechanics behind the system are sound, how effective will the system be at removing as much oil as possible when compared to the traditional method?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

It's not new, yes it works, and you can get it cheaper online do a search for Mityvac. Some people claim is does not get all the particles on the bottom but you do not change all the oil in the RX8 anyway.

a mechanic told me that sucking the oil out of the engine can damage your seals .its best to let it drain

They work, I have a home built version.
I use it for 'changes' between scheduled oil/filter changes, just suck out 3 qts and top it up.
Since you are only changing 1/2 the oil per change anyway, I feel better about this method.

But I never claimed to be normal.......

It works and it's not new. Do a search on "top oil extract" and you'll see a post I made last year regarding this subject.

I should clarify...

...it's "new" to Griot's. Sorry for the confusion, but I never saw a system like this before...been doing some searches for more info and have decided a system like this seems to exactly what I need. However, I do plan to keep my usual service appointment dates as detailed by Mazda...will save the fluid extractor for "in-between" changes like StealthTL does.

Thanks for the info!

I purchased my topsider from Griot at least two years ago. It pulls all 8 quarts from my 540i and 3-4 quarts from the RX-8.

FWIW - you don't need a lift or ramps to change your oil. I've found that all I need to do is roll the car up onto a pair of 2x4's laid flat on the driveway. This provides enough clearance to slide the catch pan under, and reach under and remove the drain plug.

OTOH, the pump is a nice clean way to go (I'm just too cheap, and used to doing it the old way...)
