Got my new engine
Well I got my car back today with the "new" engine, they told me there is no break in period and that I should rev it up as much as I can when driving. Sound weird any opinions on "break in"? I know its not a new engine but still looking for comments. Thanks

Thats what I did with my reman engine. For the most part kept revs to 4K or 5K, avoided WOT, etc, for the first thousand miles. Aside from a few quirky things the first few miles, the first thousand went fine for me.

About two months later it died in at the airport while I was dropping of a friend, again couldn't get it started so I had it towed to the dealership and again they said they couldn't find a problem. So they changed the plugs and ignition coils and sent me home.
Then two weeks ago I get in my car to run to dinner and it wouldn't start (again not flooded). Had it towed again and they replaced the engine. They wouldn't/coudn't tell me what the issue was only that there was something wrong and they were nice enought to replace the entire engine.
Hope the info helps, pm if you have any other questions

What can you tell us about the service it got, oil weight, change interval, other service it got. How many miles did you have on it? What Oct gas did you use, 87-91-93? What kind of driving did it get, hard , average, rarely red lined, short drives, never really heated up more then 15-20 mins? Mostly hwy? Did you ever get MIAC(Marble In A Can) ping sound of a rotary engine? Any thing you can think of? TSB's? What was your oil consumption, one qt between changes?

Well I'll try to answer all the questions. I bought the car last april with 38,000 miles on it. The carfax report showed that there were no major things wrong although the dealership did print off the report showing that I was fully up on all recalls. The only thing I had replaced was one of the tail lights because of water.
They told me that they had just changed the oil so I waited until july and took it back to the dealership to have it changed again. I always had them do it because I assumed they would know which oil to use. To be honest i'm not really sure what they put in it. I would hope it was the factory recomended stuff but I really couldn't say. I've had no other major repairs other than: re-flash the computer, plugs, ignition coils,, engine. in that order.
When I first puchased the car I used regular unleaded but after the MIAC problem I've swithed to super premium and I haven't heard any noises at all. I don't race my car although every once in a while (rarely) I'll aggressively accelerate at a green light. Since it is a/t I never red line the engine. The only thing I do that might be harmfull is my commute to work is only 5 miles. So I'll start it, let it warm up for a minute or two then drive for less that 10 minutes then let it sit all day.
I don't do much highway driving at all only when I go home to visit family, and thats a 3 1/2 hour drive on 35 that I'll usually do at 70-80mph.

When an engine is not really warmed up it will keep alot of gas, water, carbon build up in the engine and oil. You would probably be best to premix some oil in your gas each fill up, so your cold engine has more oil to lube it when all that raw gas is burning when it is cold. Look a premix post.

Anything unusual about your car, Extreme driving style, oil type, etc.? What kind of symptoms did you have and how much time between that and Mazda diagnosing it?
I hope my first reman engine is nice

I'm just about ti havr my 3rd engine installed in my saab 9-2x and I'm buying an rx-8 on friday...
The first engine in the 9-2 lasted 22k miles and threw a rod on the freeway at around 85mph.
The second engine (in the car right now) is at 5k miles and spun 2 rod bearings on cyl 1 & 4. Because the 2.5 is on "national back order" they put a full Subaru STi 2.0 in it w/out the turbos, which made the car slower due to lower compression but I didn't complain until it spun the bearings...
Another 2.0 is going in next week and SAAB thinks it's safe to drive it until then...
I hope my '04 Rx-8 will last... it has an extended warranty up to 100k / 4 years.
I might take it for a weekend long test drive and check if everything is OK with it and doesn't have any problems and purchase it on monday if everything is OK!
