Good Battery replacement for the Stock one?
 

I've recently bought my 8, and it now needs a new battery after a failed test and when i turn it on, it has a little trouble turning over.

are there any recommended batteries you guys would suggest? or just a simple replacement from Autozone??

Do a search on battery and lots of threads come up. Most people consider Optima overpriced now that Johnson Controls owns them and Johnson Controls makes a lot of batteries for other brands. Many 8 owners have been happy with their JC batts.

^ Many of Walmart's Everstart batteries are made by Johnson Controls (noted on the battery itself). If you go with Walmart, hopefully the ones in OC have the stronger "N" model with 640CCA.

+1 The Diehard Platinum P-5, Group 35, fits perfectly, deep-cycle capable, good capacity, absolutely zero maintenance. It is expensive, but the warranty kicks ass.

The Diehard Plats are more than 2X the price of other batteries. Perhaps if you live a really really cold climate. Not worth it in California unless you want a very good and very expensive battery.

Anything with a free 3 year replacement warranty.

Costco, either the regular brand for lowest cost (~$55) or an Optima Red Top (~$115)

I just paid more for a tiny Odyssey racing battery for my RX-8 than the Red Top I put in my truck. :puke:

2X the price? Closer to $50.00 more if you're comparing better quality batteries. The ease in getting a warranty claim through is well worth the additional cost; not to mention all the places you can submit a claim!

On the Sears site, they list the Group 35 battery at $189.99. That seems pretty darn pricey to me. If you need the 740CCA, it'd be worth it.

I didn't realize that Costco had Optima Red Top available for $115. That's pretty good considering it's $149 direct from Optima.

WOW 115 is cheap i paid 149 shipped for my optima red top. So far no problems with my battery and the stock battery has 630 CCA and the Red Top has 720CCA

Know what you're talking about before you call someone a fool. And even then....

For one thing, there is a reason why there is a recommended size, and it has to do with cooling airflow inside the battery box. Heat is an enemy of battieries, The rotary throws a lot of heat, and if you stuffed too large a battery in the box, your extra CCAs may not be there when you expect. There is a white mark on the battery box past which the battery should not extend. Simply fitting inside the box is not the measure of applicability.

Furthermore, CCA alone are not a very useful measure of capacity. More important are amp-hours and reserve capacity.

The Sears Die-Hard Platinum P-5 is a re-branded Odyssey battery. That means, in addition to the zero maintenance aspect, it has deep-cycle capacity. It will retain its capacity even if it gets run down occasionally by extended parking. Or, if the car is flooded it will give you a better chance at recovery, without damaging the battery (and risking a future flooding event).

How much will you spend replacing your battery, and how long will it last?
What is the real cost per mile over the long-term?

Not everyone has the same needs or wants. But there are many for whom the $189 battery is a good deal for what you get.

+ a zillion, mostly because it's an Odyssey rebrand.

I have this also. I think I paid 89.99 at Autozone for mine. (with a turn in of the old battery)

i paid for the autozone DLG ones... had a hard time getting it in because of some pretty bad corrosives! but got it taken care of and now its running perfect. i didnt think i'd need to spend >$100 for a battery :/

Your previous battery must have been in really bad shape. In SoCal, you're not going to need more than 640CCA to get going any time of the year.

Well time for me to replace my battery. It's going on about 4 years 3 months and I don't want to chance things esp. since there is a slight hesitation when starting cold.

I'm going to go with either the Costco Kirkland or Walmart Everstart Maxx (N) batteries. Identical warranties and specs. Both made by Johnson Controls.

Costco is $59.99 and Walmart is $75. Walmart includes free installation.

Is it hard to change the battery? I've only taken off the cover before. Also any experiences with either. I think people on here have had good experiences with both rebranded JC batts.

Quality varies, even its made by the same company. You get what you paid for.

When you buy a battery, You might want to pay attention to its CCA and RC rating.

Thanks. All the JC batteries like Walmart Everstart Maxx, Costco Kirkland, Autozone Duralast Gold, Interstate Mega-Tron Plus have identical 640CCA and 800CC. To me that says same battery, different labels.

The only mainstream batteries with better specs are Diehard Platinum and Optima Red Top (JC-made).

Here are ratings from Nov. 09 Consumers Report battery test. Too bad it didn't include the numerical scores. My parents have mag but too far to go look. I read the article a month ago and it seemed all the batteries scored roughly the same. If I recall, all the batteries at the top provided good cranking but the Bosch had a better life than the others.

From my research online, the Bosch batteries are now made by Exide. My friend just put one of the Bosch Premium Powers in his GTI. I've read mixed opinions about Exides.
