https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...t=borla+flames
This one ,I believe is an aftermarket one ,but as it goes on they mention it has happened on the stock muffler .which I guess is ok being the stock one is stainless packed
http://home.covad.net/~store014/speedborla.mov
There are more links but I think you get the picture

Regarding flames (coming from exhaust, not in posts!!)
I have personally witnessed flames from another members car at QR on decel into turn 1 (approx 150 - 170 km/h). I was following, and it is captured briefly on video.
His car is Hymee Enhanced, and I have not had a report of problems with his muffler.
(Sorry for my continued defence, your honour )
Cheers,
Hymee.
BTW - I can get stainless wrapping on the custom made mufflers if required. It was offered to Caio when I first offered exhaust and tuning experts to assist in his turbo project being a sucess.

For My defense your honour. ...let it be known the truth that Hymee gave me the contact of the gentleman And I went to his house where he makes hymee's exhaust....and other projects . This was for this gentleman to install my Greddy Turbo kit ( it was a fantastic price BTW, )
The moment I changed my mind and wanted to get a custom turbo kit done ,this gentleman stopped the project as he said it was a conflict of hymee's interest
And as for the stainless packed option you gave me .....I saved a small fortune and did it myself ....and by the way ....I am 90% finished in designing my stainless muffler system that bolts perfectly in the stock hangers of the RX8
The defense Rests your honour

Carl,
Thanks for that. I couldn't get the video to download but I'll take your word for it.
However, doesn't this post from Wildcard (in blue who quotes the guy who features in the video in red) in one of the threads you linked me to sum it all up:
True. It appears that the flame thrower party trick takes some preparation. Here is what speedracer had to say on it:
--------------------------------
Don't worry, it doesn't shoot flames like that unless you really go out of your way to make it happen.
The reciepe to flames is:
Warm up engine
Get the exhaust red hot by running the car over 6k RPMs for several minutes
Come to a stop or at least keep it under 60 MPH (slower = bigger flames)
Rev it hard (WOT) and lift off on the throttle quickly
INSTANT FLAMES!!!
As you can see, it is not easy to get flames because the conditions have to be perfect to ignite the unburnt fuel. Likewise I have not seen any damage to the paint or body work on the car but your mileage may vary.
If Mazda ever corrects the pig rich fuel map the flames will probably go away for good.
------------------------------------
Given this, it's quite probable that you could get flames out of the standard exhaust if you did the same amount of 'prep' work.
Judging by this and some of the comments from the other, ahem, 'flame enthusiasts', inducing flames is hardly a commonplace or likely event for those of us who drive on the street and attend the odd track day. Indeed, sounds like you've got to work quite hard to make it happen.
So on this evidence how can you make a blanket statement that the RX8 and fibreglass packed mufflers are a dangerous combination per se? I'm sorry, but it is a claim so generalised and with such little backing as to be incredible.
And Hymee, go for it mate. I was simply suggesting that I was more interested to hear from those making the claims as I was satisfied with your earlier arguments.

Perhaps you should also resist from referring to each other's mods and products.

And following on from Revolver's quote on how to flame an exhaust, one of the recent recalls was to reduce the heat generated by sitting still revving the engine, which was known to melt the fuel tank. I would say being able to cause a stock RX-8 with the recall work done is going to be even harder.
The only link I could find to a flaming RX-8 was one that had an aftermarket cat-back exhaust put on.

The RX-8 ECU has a specific decel fuel cut that prevents sustained combustion in the muffler / outlet. Yes you can get some pretty little flashes and they make great videos if that's what pops you cork but ultimately that won't do jack because the muffler doesn't have time to heat up.
If you happen to be running a piggyback ECU and it overrides the decel fuel cut then I can see you possibly having a problem. But when you're in that territory you know what you've got yourself in for.
Like I said your biggest problem is scorched clear coat on the rear bumper and if that's the kind of thing that bothers you then perhaps you should be looking at one of Hondas delightful little shitb ^H^H^H^H^H econocars

But with a known melting point you can then know that its application is only suitable up until a specific exhaust temperature, which I am hazzarding a guess is going to be well above any exhaust temperatures likely to be seen on even a FI modified RX8 (flame shooting aside).

Quick search:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_fiber
The basis of textile grade glass fibers is silica, SiO2. In its pure form it exists as a polymer, (SiO2)n. It has no true melting point but softens up to 2000°C, where it starts to degrade. At 1713°C, most of the molecules can move about freely....
Cheers,
Hymee.

Actually (why I am prolonging the life of this thread I don't know)...I thought exhaust temps of FI engines would be lower than for NA cars. Am sure I saw that somewhere. And while it is initially count-intuitive, it makes sense when you think about it. Or did I dream all this??

Speedracer's exhaust that shot the flames was a Borla exhaust. I can't remember if he had a CZ unit as well or not.
I originally wanted to get a Borla myself, but it was going to cost about a grand to land one in oz by the time shipping and customs costs were taken into account. God I drooled over that flame shooting vid for weeks though!

Now's as fine a time as ever to update this thread.
Following on from the Identity Crisis thread I submit the following pictures taken of a Hymee stainless steel muffler cut open after thirty-odd thousand kilometres (approx 18,500 miles).
Note the fine condition of the fibreglass packing. Soft and fluffy......like the cashmere of a supermodels sweater.
For your viewing pleasure,
Gomez.
