The guy was an idiot. No problem at all if you are not trying to do it under high acceleration,

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzz....wrong answer from him. I hop quite often from 4 to 6 and haven't had any trouble.

It's like anything else. No problem if done correctly. Don't upshift too many gears and lug the engine. Don't downshift without rev matching. If either of these are questionable in your technique then don't do it.

Perfectly safe so long as your revs don't get to low. I love to accelerate hard to get up to speed, utilitzing the full RPM range. But once up to speed I'll stick the the transmission into 5/6 depending on the speed limit I'm in. Take your time with the final shift and the revs will drop by the time you engage the gear. It'll be smooth that way.

when I had a Z06 and drove it on the street I would only use 2-4-6, lowend torque is a wonderful thing

Hopping gears is one of the reasons 6 speed Celicas wind up with blown engines. It's easy to misshift when hopping gears.

I personally ENJOY rowing through all six and really don't understand why anyone would get a manual transmission and then drive it like an automatic. LOL

When I had my 1969 GTO (back in the early 70's) I was able to (with the 4:33 gears) take off in 4th gear and drive it without shifting. Torque, hp and gearing allows it to be done, but I only did it to 'show off' and was not a regular method of driving.

I often use 1-3-5 for in traffic easy acceleration.

I don't see how you can blow an engine skipping a gear on an upshift.

Might go too low a gear and dump clutch thinking your in "that gear" and then.....tach buries......smoke rises.

That would probably be my only concern is synchro wear (not that I've heard they suck on the '8 though). I'd just double clutch if I was going to hop. I generally don't though. Like 6speed8, I enjoy hitting all the gears.

double clutch helps smooth out upshifting when hopping gears :D

It happens when hopping going DOWN, 6-4-2. missing 4th and going to 2 (on a piston engine)

If you just accelerated to 60 mph in 2nd gear and you are going to cruise at 60 mph, then shifting 3-4-5-6 will actually cause more wear than skipping a gear or two. Shifting gears and staying at the same speed serves no purpose.

Need help (reassurance) with gear shifting

Just got my silver 8 (6MT) three weeks ago and love the handling, the looks, etc.
A couple of worries though. Whenever I am in traffic and move at slow speed and low rpm in 1st or 2nd gears, I have to be very, very gentle with pressing on the gas pedal or the car will jerk every time. Also, all gears shift very smooth except for shifting from 1 to 2 (sometimes there is resistance in shifting the ****). Also, when I let the clutch go on the 2nd gear the car jerks sometimes even though I try to be very, very slow releasing the clutch. Am I doing something wrong (not doing something right) or is it my RX-8 being naughty? Please help. Thanks.

personally, i enjoy going through all the gears. no hopping for me.

i just dont see an advantage in normal driving situations. not worth any risk.

Press the clutch in when in slow traffic then act like you are starting off from a dead stop. That will take the jerking away. If you let the clutch out after the engine has lost rev, it will jerk going into another gear.
