First Oil Change: Miles or Months?
My 8 has 2,000 miles on it after 5 months of ownership (it's a weekend-only car, needless to say). Any thoughts about having the oil changed with so few miles on it? I know new cars don't generally use "break-in" oil per se, but some gearhead friends have suggested waiting another couple of thousand miles before changing it. I've always thought changing oil on time instead of miles was a good idea given that oil can degrade (e.g., with moisture, combustion byproducts, etc.) even when the engine isn't running. I'd be interested to hear whether there is a consensus on this forum.
And, yes, I know I should be driving more!!!
Thanks for your thoughts.

I change mine every 3,000 miles because an oil change doesn't change all the oil in the '8 (oil coolers hold a good deal that doesn't come out). Knowing that, I wouldn't really feel bad about doing it ever 2,000 miles, seeing as an oil change is only about $15 if you DIY (and a full tank of gas is at least $25!). Besides, it's fun to play with your car.
In 6 months of ownership, I've changed mine twice, with another coming in about 1,000 miles.
I'm not sure how long it takes oil to break down as I've never asked my dad and, until I got the '8 (first car in my name), he did all the oil changes . But, for $15, why not be safe.

I guess the call is on you. 5 months??? Why not go ahead and change it... On the other hand Mazda says in the Service guide your first oil change isn't due until 7500 miles. I guess its up to you. Better safe than sorry though.

I got a free oil change coupon from my dealer since I gave him a 10+ rating on my service follow up survey.
Oh yea, I did my first at 2000 miles, and all the rest will be at every 3000. Oil is cheaper than engines.

I changed the oil at 1,000 mi & 4k and will continue every 3k or so. You might as well change it now despite the low mileage. It can't hurt.
Hope you get a chance to drive it more!
