I did a search for "first oil change miles" and got a bunch of threads that didnt have this answer.

thanks!
Well, according to Mazda- either 5k or 7.5k, depending on what maintenance schedule you're on. Many of us didn't think it was wise to wait that long, especially for the initial break-in oil change... I did mine at 2500, and change it every 2500. Some guys did their first one at or before 1000 miles. There isn't a right answer really- it depends on what your priorities are-- warranty? then follow the manual... engine longevity? Do it as soon as you feel comfortable with it. If you're thinking more about the latter- then also consider changing your break-in tranny and differential fluids out as well.

I did my first one at 1200 miles. Although the service mgr almost didnt want to take my money. He said I didnt need the first one until 3000 miles. I said , fine, but can I get one before then anyway.

I just had my "first free oil change" done today at 3500 miles.

Schedule 2 says Replace both at 30K miles. Why the rush?

Again it's about priorities... if you saw the metallic gunk that is removed from the drain plugs on the initial tranny and diff oil changes, you'd understand the rush. I personally like to eliminate problems before they become problems so I can drive the hell out of the car without regret... and always having fresh fluids (including Redline in the tranny/synth) is one way to do that. It's also a great way to spend time getting your hands dirty getting to know your new car.

Seen it, and its not that big a problem from a lubrication or damage standpoint. Gears are much more forgiving of suspended metal particles in the fluid than engine components. Engine parts such as seals , bearing, & races really don't like metal shavings.

I do agree, however, that the schedule is too long (30K miles), it is not as important as regular engine oil changes. I will probably have the trans/diff oil changed (dealer) at my next oil change (6000) or the following change (9000).

And the days of "greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes" are over for me. I'd much rather have the dealer do it (documented) and take responsibility for any screw ups (as I have done).

I have already bonded with the car. We are now inseparable.
