Exotic speed header installation

Hello gurus,

10 minutes after the full exhaust installation (header, mid pipe, exhaust) my engine light went on (right after the shop closed).

1st assumption, sensor problem, i check the sensors right after i arrived the house, everything is in place and tight.

This morning, when i take out the stock header from my trunk, i noticed that there is an adaptor attached to the stock header... that means that the sensor is attached directly to the exotic speed header.

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/1...adaptor.th.jpg

Question:
Since, it is Sunday and i cannot find any open shop nearby today, does driving around will damage the sensor attached to the header without the adapter? i tried to fix it my self, but my tools are not enough to do the job.

Any input will be very much appreciated..

Regards,
Chris

One more thing...

The stock mount/plate of the oem header to the car doesn't fit the exotic speed header.
See image attached, no plate attached as of the moment ...

Any other users here has the same problem with the mounting of exotic speed header?
I already email the seller/exotic speed about the plate/mount if they suppose to provide it.

This are the only two reason i can think of why the engine light went on...

If you installed a cat-less mid-pipe then you check engine light normally comes on.
I have no idea about the adapter on the stock header but if you have access to a code reader i'm sure it is the second O2 sensor because of the removal of the catalytic converter.

thank you for the input sir.

i installed a mid pipe with high flow cat system...

i order a coob access port from mazda maniac a week ago, i cant wait to have it in my hands, i have 3 outstanding issues now...

Yeah then you can check the codes and we can help more.
I ordered mine yesterday can't wait to get it.

That adapter might be important, I would e-mail exoticspeed and ask them. I litterally just sent them an e-mail reguarding their mid-pipe so idk how good or fast they reply yet. Guess 10 minutes isn't really fair on a sunday. But if the gasket is not required I would not worry too much about the cel as long as you check the codes and they are cat related. Even though you have a high flow cat it could still throw a cel easily because of the difference.

phey_05 07-25-2010 03:45 PM

Ok, copy...

so we really cant tell until we check the codes, but the mid pipe might be the culprit also...

anyone with the experience will solve this problem though...

I'm also worried to drive around because im not sure if it will damage the sensor.

start counting days... according to Jeff shipping will be minimun of 15 days...

:crying:

what year is your 8, and on 04-05 normally the cel pops on after a few drive cycles or 50+ miles after installing a mid pipe.

alz0rz 07-26-2010 09:47 AM

You removed your cat.
Your CEL is almost definitely for catalyst efficiency below threshold.

HaydonGS 07-26-2010 09:50 AM

^thats what I was thinking

phey_05 07-26-2010 12:24 PM

yes sir, mine is 2004 model.
got this from another thread...
can't wait for my coob AP from mazdamaniac...

Its normal to have a CEL with a midpipe.
Since the rear O2 sensor checks the efficiency of your cat (which is no longer inline), its letting your know there is a problem (obviously).

Only way to mask the CEL is to purchase the Cobb AccessPort and disable the bit for that particular code.
This way, you'll know if another DTC code is generated..

So basically your saying I don't have a big problem and shouldn't worry about this particular code??? It won't harm anything under the hood?

Nothing to worry about.
Like I mentioned, with the AP it'll only mask certain codes and allow you to see others.
So if you get a CEL AFTER you install the AP, then you have something else wrong (and you can use your AP to read the code).

another one from John:

You removed the catalytic converter... so of course you're going to get a CEL.
The rear O2 sensor is there to monitor the cat's efficiency... which is telling you there is now a "problem".

If you have an '04 or early '05, then you likely need an upgraded starter and new battery (if still OEM).
Its a common problem with those years.

Should i change my battery and upgrade my starter?

ohhh my...

I didn't do my research very well... my bad...

issues are keep on popping up...

i encounter this yesterday on my 30min-1hr drive to freeway...

and i assume this one too...

Dad said he could see the CAT glowing cherry red.

I'm assuming since my CAT was glowing red, I probably melted the insides of the cat?
I have some sort of aftermarket 3" high flow cat, also obx catback exhaust and obx chrome headers if that matters.

My question is assuming my CAT is melted or messed up, how will this affect the car?
Can I clean out the CAT and gut it? Will this hurt anything? Is the CAT difficult to get off? I don't really care that the CEL is on. I just don't want to hurt anything.

I felt the heat inside my car while im drive on the freeway... the only possible reason to cause this heat is the midpipe i installed...

:(

Is it worth it to tune my exhaust set-up or just replace it with the OEM? can the coob access port fix this issues?

It seems that there's a lot more issues than success on having this kind of exhaust set-up...

Chris

good luck with getting the issue resolved. I'm planning on installing an obx header soon as well. See how that goes...
