Exhaust smell inside car

Hey guys I just bought a used RX8 about a week ago and noticed an exhaust smell inside the car
the smell is strongest when the car is not moving

the car is a 2004 6-speed with about 40k miles on it, no recalls or anything that I am aware of

any help would be apreciated

The last person to fill up the oil in the car probably spilled a little on the engine and its burning. Give it two weeks to see if it goes away.

Have somebody - either the dealer or a good muffler shop - take a look at the exhaust. I suggest doing that as soon as you can. Exhaust fumes are nothing to sneer at.

If you go to a dealer, have them look up the recall and service history of the car. There have been some recalls and campaigns, mostly updates to the ECU flash. Unless the original owner bought it before mid-March '04, you're still under bumper-to-bumper warranty, so getting the exhaust checked should be free. The latest flash was an emissions recall, and would be free even if out of warranty.

Dont forget to drive with a window open to let air in. If it's actually exhaust entering your cabin, this can cause you to pass out. By the time you notice you're light headed it could be too late to pull over.

Remember people purposely hook up tubes from their exhausts to their cabin and close the windows. Suppose to be a painless way to call it quits...and I don't suggest that since you have a wonderful car to drive.
