I think it looks nice. It gives the engine compartment a nice clean look. Does it really dissipate the heat? How? It doesn't feel warm after the engine has been running. I think it's just cosmetic. If you don't like it, take it out.

nice to see another pinoy in the forum. what i meant was, i take the engine cover off when i bring my 8 to the dealer. there were people in this forum who lost their covers after they had their cars serviced by the dealer. I put mine in the trunk and put it back on when i get home. cheers

My last visit to the dealer resulted in a missing rear rubber grommet for the engine cover. They've since ordered a replacement grommet at their expense. Gonna take it off next time; I like the trunk idea.

It's definitely functional ... not just cosmetic. Air flow is pushed across the top of the engine and directed to the side vents. Remove the cover and there is less directed flow and more heat-soak of the engine compartment. It helps create and maintain a tunnel effect.

As a past FC driver, I have to question Mazda's design thoughtfulness regarding the cover. They had three generations of 7's to figure out how to put the stinkin' dipstick where you get to it without sinking into the engine compartment up to your shoulder. So what do they do with the 8? Leave the dipstick at oilpan level and hide BOTH the dipstick and fill cap under a cover!!! I think the cover should be some kind of hinged flip-up thingy that you could just lift and have it stick to the underside of the hood.
The cover looks cool but it's definitely a PITA on a rotary.
Good thing I'm so crazy about this car. A thing like that could really get to you.

^^ (?) My dipstick isn't under the cover. It's not at all difficult to check the oil once you're used to it. The only hard part is if it's dark it can be hard to see the tube to re-insert. Gonna have to install a little light for that, I think.
