Dyno help (less hp)

Hey guys.

I dyno ran my car today to see how much HP its really making since i done some minor mod's like removing the catalyst and installing a HKS exhaust system.

But the result was not what i expected from the stock 231hp it now only had 214 HP on the flyweel and 183 hp on the wheels. the curve on the run was also not smooth upwards it had three small bumps in it ( i attached a picture of the dyno for you to see) dunno if thats normal? :-/

Any ideas to what might be wrong with it? Its done only 65.000 km .

Thanks alot up front.

180+ whp is average. Exhaust swap doesn't do **** for performance.

That is lower on the scale but sounds about right. Most make between 180-190 on a healthy engine. remember dynos are not that specific. Mazda's number are just claims, unless you had your car dynoed new on the same dyno you just ran on then you cannot compare the two numbers. For all you know you were making the same power brand new.

There are so many variables that can play into a dyno run results.

Yeah it is depressing. I have seen guys with nearly all of the bolt on mods dyno less than guys who were nearly stock. Some people are just lucky and get a jewel engine.

Removing the cat should actually help to get a few extra HP, so 183 HP with no cat is kinda low but not alarmningly so.
Do an ignition tuneup as it was mentioned... get new coils / plugs / wires, that should smoothen the curve and hopefully help a bit. If almost everything from those components is still the factory original after 65000 km, then it is due anyway.

and throw out that "214hp onthe flywheel" number - its garbage with no relevance in the real world. I dont understand why but its the norm in Europe to give the dyno customer a calculated flywheel number after a dyno run. But its a bullshit number. Its made up. They could just have easily said it was 300 at the flywheel or 100. the only way to get a flywheel number for your engine is to remove it from the car and put it on an engine dyno.

the only number that matters is the number at the wheels. the only way it matters is if you have measured it before on that dyno and you made more or less power this time.

your graph looks normal- the bumps are the intake tracts opening - for a car doing a run in 5th. you could just a s well do it in 4th and perhaps be slightly more accurate because of stress /movement on the dyno.

definitely if you havent recently, change the coils and plugs and probably clean your air filter.
