How did yours break? One suggested to look for one at Home Depot or a hardware store, not sure if one has a spring of the same size and strength. Just like a few members here, I am still using the same one that broke. I just used a long nose and bent another hook at the end where it broke.

I got mine from grainger. I would think quality would be there but won't be sure until it breaks again. They had the exact same size and everything.

Ok, i give up. I'm having this same issue. I got the door unlocked, but i haven't got a clue how to get to the retainer spring. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How far did you get to dissecting the door? It's in a black box where the striker is. I updated all the pictures I took, those should help.

I got the screws off the side of the door and I can move the assembly our and around, but it's still connected to the rod leading up to the door handle (can't see a good way to get that off.) I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get that black box open. I'll check your pictures out.

Take a box cutter or sharp knife and slice it down the middle. Then take something and pry it open. Move the rod up/down and it should pop open.

Did you read about the kid who flipped flopped from the passenger side into his driver side for like six-months?

Yes I did. Luckily I don't drive my 8 as much. I start it from time to time, that must have been a good workout for him. :D

I had the same thing happen to my car. I was going to ask if anyone knew how to fix this.. then i saw the post. Mine started out just once in awhile it would not open from the inside. But i kept hitting the lock back and forth and then it would open. Then one day it would not open at all. I would have to crawl over from the other side to get in the car. Then i stopped at a shop one day and the man took one of those things that slides down by the window and kept trying then the outside handle broke off and he said something is broken on the inside of the door panel and he had to order a new door handle. It took him a month to get a price and get back to me. Finally my boyfriend at the time went and got the old handle and said he would fix it hisself. Well, he never got around to it and then we broke up so I have been driving like this for about 5 months. This is what I have to do to get in. I have to take the key in the key hole and turn it to unlock so the alarm won't go off and I have to leave my window down enough to stick my hand in the window
and open it with the inside handle or I have to unlock with the key first and go to the other side open door and reach over and open it from the inside and push it open. It is a pain in the *** for sure and I am sick of it. Now, that I am single can't afford to take it to shop cause I am having to put tires on it now and had to get another rim. Yeah it sucks. Also, my air conditioner quits cooling when its idling and my CD player quit working. I have about 60,000 miles on it.

Umm... Not trying to be an ***, but did you even read the thread? Your answer is already answered, right here, in this very spot. You have to remove the screws and yank the **** outta it, with all your weight, might, and whoop ***. Don't just yank once, just keep yanking the **** outta it, and it will come off. Gonna break some fasteners so buy some.

welp same thing happen to me today, driver side door wont open (must be a 1st gen thing). glad i found the thread so i know what i will be doing this weekend. im gonna try the battery thing first and see if that works. I'm guessing when you guys take the door panel off its when the driver side door is closed.

i know there are screws on the end of the door that are hidden when the door is closed.

The driver door will be locked to the rear door and the rear door is locked to the bottom frame of the car. Reach behind and open the rear door. That will give you at least two to three inches of space with the driver seat pushed all the way back. The doors will flex since it's made of aluminum. Good luck!
