that is the backbone of my custom exhaust. i lov eit, it sounds better than all of the others i have heard.

mmats69 07-16-2005 08:10 AM

I have the Magnaflow Exhaust and it will pop when coming down after a high rev. Got it up to around 7k this mornin on the way home from work and it was quite noticeable when i shifted. Granted I had the windows down but you would have heard it even with them up. I thought myself it was out of the ordinary but after I got smoked by a CTS V8 and heard that exhaust pop, I knew it was normal.

slllygrl10 07-16-2005 08:21 AM

my 8 does it all the time I kinda likkkee it!!!

devious12 07-16-2005 12:16 PM

I have a stock catback and a midpipe on my 8. While shifting gears, if I stomp the gas real hard while shifting at around 8k I'll get a boom instead of just a pop, it's pretty damn loud, sounds like a gun shot, I love it.

thuneon 07-18-2005 04:34 AM

I love it when backfirering, too ! Its great ! Cant wait how it fires on with RP supercat midpipe i ordered last week. Hope i'll receive it end of this week.

Here is a vid if my backfirering 8 :-D

Can a stock 2004 RX8 backfire?

:x I cant ever tell, i hear the burble sound when driving it hard but Ive never had anyone able to tell me whether or not I get "flammage" ;]

Id love to show off like a idiot if it can do that.

imput1234 08-28-2008 09:59 PM

HKS Hi Power = backfire every time your foot is off the throttle, or as you decrease throttle. lol

All rotary engines pop when you roll off the throttle, you just can't hear it with the OEM exhaust setup. To get a stock RX-8 to really backfire, you need to romp on it hard for a while first. Very rough on the cat.

Easy_E1 08-30-2008 08:34 PM

Yep mine pops and flames. It's wonderful!

Mazurfer 08-30-2008 08:51 PM

Holy old thread resurrection batman! :Eyecrazy:

ShinkaTeen 08-30-2008 08:52 PM

HKS exhaust. DUHHH..

and i love it.

Unfortunately yes. It probably makes people think my rx8 is broken.

For some reason, if I keep backfiring for a minute, vehicles start to back off behind me. I'm not sure if it is bad premix smell or whatever that causes them to start keeping their distance. Guess I'll never know but it is useful to shake those people off your tail sometimes.

if you have a midpipe is is likely they are seeing fire. that tends to make people back off.

beers

ducttape4054 09-03-2008 07:18 PM

hell i runnen wit a midpipe n AP cat system. i backfire alot. loud n flamen

krijpipudht 11-23-2008 07:39 PM

Old thread resurrection again.
What cause the pop?
Any why rotary with cat shoot no frame? (I thought flame can get pass maze in cat-back, why can't it go through cat?...)

Can you elaborate more?

Just wonder, thanks. :spank:

If too much gas goes into the engine, not all of it can burn because the oxygen is used up. So some gas is left over and gets into the exhaust.

If it is hot enough it will combust as soon as it reaches some oxygen, like near the tailpipe. The sudden combustion causes the pop.

A catalytic converter can break down the excess hydrocarbon before it gets to the tailpipe. This only works up to a point. Early RX-8 with overly-rich fuel maps still managed to backfire, even with catalytic converter.

chickenwafer 11-23-2008 11:09 PM

I can time mine right it literally sounds like shotgun or a small bomb accompanies by a pretty large fireball.
Blow off valves that vent tend to cause that.

04RX8man 11-24-2008 12:33 PM

yeah it's more of a puff of air not a BAM like a real backfire shooting flames etc(which can be done btw)

RedLine9x 11-25-2008 10:48 PM

funny, my car has 80k miles on it and the only thing that happens when revving is the slight smell of overused gas

szym0n 11-26-2008 03:53 PM

mine did b4 i had a stock but you couldn't hear it as good with a cat-back, its sexy=D

Mark_Lyons_231 02-09-2009 03:29 PM

sorry to ressurect this post, but i cant stop myself........
i've got a custom made stainless exhaust system and an AEM induction kit, and mine backfires and pops and bangs and flames, its just shit hot, go down an unlit road at nite and give it the beans and when i shift up, it lights the entire street up, as well as waking them with the bang too haha

dozer 02-09-2009 03:31 PM

^nice! yeah mine backfires and pops really loud, i put in a turboxs midpipe but left the stock exhaust on :)
