Difference between RP race and normal oil?

What are the difference between Royal Purple's motor oils; race and normal?

Is it recommended to use race oil? Beneficial?

Please note this is not a synthetic vs dino thread.

I am running RP's oil and want to know whether its better to run race oils?

Their race oil is still a full detergent oil and is perfectly fine to use on the street. It has a few additives in greater proportions which make it an even better lubricating oil. It's the additive package that makes motor oil what it is. At $12 a quart it would be expensive to use and the slight benefit it gives probably won't be anything terribly useful unless you are hard on your car at a track all day and need that last little bit from your oil. The regular RP is such good stuff already that I'm not sure how much better it can get with the race oil. I run the Race 21 in my Honda transmission since that car runs motor oil in the gearbox but that's the only place I run the race oil as it was only 2 quarts and it almost never needs changing. I use the regular RP in all of my cars engines.

unless you have a dedicated track car, I would just stick to the regular RP Oil, as thats what I run.

So it will not damage any parts eg. converter or void warranties.

Btw its not SAE approved right?

Brillo and I both visited RP one day as it is here in Houston and we know someone who works there. The race oil CAN get approval but they haven't bothered as it is quite expensive. Their regular oils meet all minimum standards as that's all they are. SAE approval is like grades in school. Meeting SAE standards means you pass. A D in school means you pass. It doesn't mean you can't do better though hence an A, B, or C. We all know that a D isn't al that good but it passes. That's what meeting SAE minimum standards means. Don't worry too much about SAE approval. Alot of people like to use it as a reference but most have no idea what it is and how it is determined. Any RP oil can meet the requirements but they really only care about their regular line getting approval as that's what they sell the most. They don't sell enough race oil to justify the approval cost.

A better oil can not harm your engine or any other part. This is a myth spread by ignorant people who have no clue what oil even is or how it works. Nothing voids warranties if manufacturers don't find out about them. Don't tell them like alot of very dumb people always do. A regular oil that is inferior yet more common is far more likely to cause any problems. Most people use these with no major issues though so how could a better oil be worse?
