didnt do 1000 mile service...

ok, im a jackass...

anyway, a while ago my brother told me to take my car in for a service at 1000mi. so i check the manual and theres no mention in the schedules so i figure its one of those purist type things. anyway, the other day he was calling me a moron for it again and telling me to read a sticker. so i read it and it says "1000 miles next service" or something like that.

anyway, have i destroyed my car or is it something that wont really cause a problem.

ive got approx. 2400 or 2500 miles on it, so should i just go do it ASAP or simply wait for 3k miles to roll around?

thanks, and dont flame me, TOO hard

What sticker, and where are you reading from?

Sounds like someone is just trying to get you to pay for really frequent oil changes.

i have a sitcker in the window from the dealer next service at 3000 miles. it will be the first service/oil change, you can get it done at 1000 miles but you didnt hurt anything by not getting it done.

I didn't get a little sticker in the window for my next service. I'll change my own oil at 1000 adn check fluids, belt tension, etc. The first 1000-1500 miles on an engine usually produce the most waist in the oil due to brake in. So I'll do it anyways.

Either you are way young and this is your 1st car maybe or you've never been to a 'Jiffy Lube' type place. Elsewise, I hope you guys are just kidding around in here. You are talking about those little stickers oil joints/dealer put on cars telling you to come back 'real' soon. Nothing to do with the RX-8, Mazda, or anything.

example from my other 'good car', they want my $29.99 every 3000 miles, 3 months or smthg like that as I had it done 9/28:

The sad thing is that businesses like Jiffy Lube put those stickers on there because people seem to take them as gospel above owner's manuals.

I thought it was generally a good idea to make the first oil change early on a new car - to get rid of metal fragments, surface coatings and other junk which end up in the oil while the engine's being broken in. Maybe this isn't as applicable to rotaries though...

Metal fragments?

Do you guys think that metal fragments are actually making it past the oil filter in a modern car? I hope not or that filter isn't worth anything.

Usually that's for engines from 1970! Most newer engines have better tolerances in manufacturing, so the long mileage first oil change is gonna be fine for most people. Remember, you have an oil filter, that catches the majority of shavings anyway.

Just be paranoid and change it early... what can it hurt? I did mine at about 1100 miles, and it was pretty easy.

Search the tech forum for "oil change for dummies" for some decent pics if you might be inclined to do it yourself.

This can't be that difficult.....READ THE MANUAL....oil changes every 5K miles. Check the oil frequently until then.

Whoever slapped that sticker in your car is probably the same person who puts signs on peoples back that says "kick me". Only in this case it's "give me your money because I'm going to hold you up for an uneeded oil change".

Again...READ YOUR MANUAL!

I've learned to never trust Jiffy Lube places. I once took my GTi to one of those places only to find out that they don't know how to change the different type oil filter that VWs require. The most disturbing part of this was that the manager pretty much said that the guys who work there can't handle anything more difficult than unscrewing the old filter and screwing a new filter in. From that point on I no longer trusted Jiffy Lube type places and change my own oil.

I have never known of any of the Juffy Lube type places to know very much about my cars. I agree with the others, Read the Manual.

Ummm, MKIII VR6 GTI???? You must mean the insert oil filter, right?

Jiffy Lube is a great place if you need a new engine. Get oil changed. Go home, unscrew drain plug. Run engine until it seizes. Blame Jiffy Lube.

Might want to check with the morality gods, and any paperwork that you might have to sign. My intent is to only make you laugh, of which you will have the final decision to laugh.

UGH... can you tell that I've been writing RFP docs today?
