I am almost due for a service on my car, which means new Spark Plugs, Coils, and Wires. This will be the first tune-up/service/whatever you want to call it for my 8.

Does anyone know how much it usually costs to have it done at a dealer? I am sure it cheap by any means, but my parents want to know (might be getting the service done for my b-day).

Buy the stuff yourself and take it to a good rotary/Mazda mechanic. Dealer service depts. are a rip off. Plugs no more than $80, coils for about $130. No need to replace wires until every 60K I've been told.

thats how easy it is to change out coils...spark plugs are a lil harder cus you gotta take the wheel off

coils should be around 130ish for all 4 and plugs should only be about 80 bucks for all four

This is a pretty basic maintenance item that can easily be done with someone even if you're not very mechanically inclined.
you'll need a few basic tool, a floor jack, jack stands, a few hours on a weekend, and a case of beer.

Certainly beats paying the dealership prices.

 

Problem is, I do not have floor jack or jack stands in order to prop my car up. If I buy all of the necessary parts and just take it to a mechanic, would that be cheaper?

 

your car has a scissor jack in the trunk and jack stands are only about $25 or so. I picked up a pair of them from Home Depot for about $30.

You could do that if you like but you'll probably pay an hour or so of labor. ($75 - $150)
If the shop isn't very familiar with the RX-8, make sure they are aware that the Trailing plugs and Leading are different (the rotor housing is marked for reference) and that they properly attach the spark plug wires. I posted a diagram of it in Dozer's DIY thread.

 

Why does a dealership charge so much more for labor than a regular mechanic?

 

just think of the sheer overhead costs to run a service dept vs a local shop.
(employees, insurance, benefits, marketing, etc etc etc)

 

And a lot of people are too lazy and/or uninformed to go look for a good 3rd party mechanic.

yeah, invite a friend over who has some tools, make sure you have cold beer, order a pizza and knock this out on a weekend.

I try and encourage owners to familiarize themselves with their vehicles even if they wouldn't normally be working on cars.
To be honest, things like this are quite simple with a little bit of guidance and some basic tools.

PLUS, the more familiar you are with your car, the less likely you are of being taken advantage of by a dealership.
After you've changed out your own plugs and coils, you'll never again think that paying a dealership $800 for this is an acceptable option. Knowledge is power my man.

for OEM coils?
www.onlinemazdaparts.com is usually the cheapest overall cost because they us US Postal to deliver.

www.finishlineperformance.com uses UPS which costs a bit more but if you're in Trinidad, that might be a better option.

I saw on ebay - "Mazda RX-8 RX8 Ignition Coil SET 2004" for US $119.90 free shipping.

These are made and tested by A1 Auto Inc. They said that it has a 3 months warranty.

Is this ok to use, has any one used these from A1 Atuo before? or go get the "IGNITION COIL MAZDA RX-8 2004-2009 N3H1-18-100B-9U"?
