I have the same issue. Lucky I am still under the 4yrs 50k mark so I will request that this be changed! Thx guys this is great to know all this! I will post my update too!

Unplug sensor and get a water temperature gauge. I'm on 2nd reservoir in 28k miles, it is that unreliable and annoying as hell when it pops up during a 4k to 6k rpm cruise.
