Combustion Recess Differences

Reading through the hardcover RX-8 book, I got curious about something. There are a couple of places where it shows the J-spec rotors having a differently shaped combustion recess than the U.S.-spec rotors. For example, page 139 shows rotors from a U.S. 12A motor having tapered recesses, while the Japanese 12A rotors had symmetrical recesses. Anyone know what effect the different recess shapes had on the motor? And yes, I do understand the difference between the MDR and LDR recesses in the later 12A's.

Most likely only to tune compression ratios for different markets/petrols.

...sorry, i know it's been going on for quite some time, and that there soon will be many of the new rotaries coming apart for tuners and race teams here in N America, but this is just too sweet :D
