AZ Clutch replacement recommendations

I'm thinking about having my clutch replaced. If I was to go aftermarket for the clutch, is it necessary to purchase an aftermarket flywheel as well. Can you use an aftermarket clutch kit with a stock flywheel? Is it recommended or should I steer clear of it?

Any recommendations as to which clutch I might look into? I've seen Exedy and ACT clutch kits, any good?

I do not do any racing, just normal day to day driving with a few redlines a day usually.

Thank you for any help you may offer,

Michael

No... just nice to install while you have the transmission dropped.

Then you have no reason to go any higher than a stage1 clutch.
The Exedy stage1 has slightly more clamping force than stock (which is also Exedy).

Michael, like I mentioned in my PM reply just now, I had some clutch work done when I got the new engine installed. FWIW, the new engine will come with a stock flywheel as part of the package.

just resurface the stock flywheel and use OE/Stage1 of Exedy clutch(whichever is cheaper)

Exedy stage 1, cheaper than OE and basically the same thing, unless you are going turbo no need to upgrade it, I race the crap out of the factory clutch including many 7000 rpm launches, usually have to replace the disc every other race season because the springs in the clutch hub go off and become loose, you will likely never have this problem on a street/daily driver car short of abusing it to death, I've blown up numerous transmissions but never a clutch, lol

AZ

Thank you for all the responses.

Jon316G- Answered each one of my questions, exactly what I needed. Thank you.

Brad- Was considering clutch work should I need a new engine. Just throwing some ideas around in my head

Charles- No problems with the clutch now, 62k+ miles, just thinking about being proactive and replacing before it actually needs replacing.

Was not aware Exedy stage 1 was comparable to OEM, thanks for the information.

Thank you.

I got approved for an engine swap by Mazda. Would like to go ahead and order a new clutch kit and have it installed while the engine is out.

So its down to the Exedy Stage 1 and the ACT HDSS. I saw several people in this thread alone recommend the Exedy Stage 1, but I was also recommended the ACT HDSS clutch kit. The ACT is slightly more expensive, but the difference in price would be negligible to me if it is indeed better for my application/better overall.

Just wanted to get any opinions about those two kits, personal experience stories are welcome also!

Thanks,
Michael

I might add a couple questions if i may.
Does anyone know which clutch has a lighter pedal feel?...the ACT or the exedy?

And whats the difference between these two:

http://www.rotaryfx.com/product_p/per1094.htm

Im guessing the 2nd link is just the stock clutch...am i right?

Cheers, Daniel

All OEM Series RX-8's use the same Clutch Plate and Pressure Plate..they are Exedy brand.

The OEM difference are the Thrust or Throw Out Bearings (different 6 speed trannies).

Series I is a different Thrust Bearing to Series II.

Edit: Going by the Pics the cheaper priced kit 'looks' like the Series II Thrust Bearing (which are cheaper (smaller) than the Series 1 TB).
I cant guarantee it though by the pic shown, I guess you are looking for Series I- 2004-2008 Clutch Kit.
There is only one style of TB for Series 1, so I don't know why the links are showing two different kits and TB for Series I when they are all the same for OEM Series I in Exedy.
