Change Cold air intake yourself ?
Hi, i bought my rx8 6 months ago, very nice all good never flooded since and done oil filter every 5k miles adding oil every 2k. I have 89k kilometers on it and no problem so far, so i am searching for little boost nothing too expansive so i though of a cold air intake and a test pipe for a bit more torque and hp but i also want a more agressive sound. I have few question about those change and im pretty new to this forum and i dont know if i am at the right place to post.
my questions are : 1- is it safe to change the cold air intake on the rx8 using aftermarket because one of my friends told me to go at the dealer to do it but they are charging me 1000 canadian $ for the intake and the mech job. So im searching for someone who has bought a cold air intake on ebay or another website and that dosent had problem so far like idle problem and etc. and how did u replace it? did u keep the old air sensor or bought a new one ? 2- is the test pipe worth it ? for 300$~ 3- what other safe improvement can i do on my 8 in the cheap range |

Cheap? go buy another car. Again, SEARCH. |
Search, search, and search. All these questions have been asked time and time again.
|
You can install an AEM intake on your own in less than 3 hours (the first time).
Test pipes are loud. Get a resonated midpipe. Cheap reliability mods? Good synthetic oil, BHR ignition, reinforced clutch pedal and Mazmart's water pump if your car sees plenty of high rpm fun. All that stuff together costs around 1000$. |
well thanks for those "clear" reply, i will search somewhere else.
suppose to be easy question:mad: |
thanks bse50. synthetics oil in a rx8 ?! and what is the mazmarts water pump cauz i rev alot lol
|
ok i saw the water pump and i wonder if its hard to install, well il check but for the moment il buy an oem cold air intake for rx8 2004 with a mid resonated pipe or somethin like that.
thanks |
:Wconfused
|
the least expensive mod you can do to a manual rx8 is the axial flow engineering short shifter. It will make the biggest difference to the feel of the car over any other mod in it's price range.
|
nice how much is it ? and what kind of improvement it will do, nothing to the power i think..
|
|
to be honest, you won't notice many gains for the amount of money you have to spend.

It makes the transitioning from gear to gear feel like a bolt action rifle (so everyone says). It won't improve anything other than feel. And that's why I think people like the mod, because everything about this car "feels" great  A reason why you're getting flamed is because people ask these questions all the time, and answers to them can be found easily by either using the search function, or else reading the stickies in the sub-forums. And, doing your own research will open up a broader range of knowledge to you about this car, making you love it all the more ;) |
Well i just did some research on the forum and called Action performence and they told me to start with a AEM cold air intake for 360$ and a test pipe for 200$, they told me to consider "flashing the chip" wonder if its good for the engine and i dont want to use more gaz, this car drink so much.

i just found on streetunit a unichip and they claims up to 40 hp gains between 3.5k and 6k very interesting i might go for that !

I got my Agency Power midpipe not too long ago. I like it a lot. Made the power band much wider. It's not very loud (yet), but it is getting louder. Still pretty quiet.

Alright so the unichip is not good catched that. But what about flashing the chip ?
I just bought a test pipe from ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/OBX-Exhaust-Cat-D...5b3504e9#payId and i was wondering if a short ram is good because i can have one for 200$ seems to be good tho but you guys know better than me. http://www.carid.com/2003-mazda-rx-8...ke-119354.html |
Should have titled this thread "FAQ's from a noobie"
|
Really?
Read read the threads in my signature. |
Good grief dude .... really you need to slow down and do some reading.
If you go and install that test pipe ... I predict your very next post will be "How do I get rid of this cel?" I don't like that short ram ... the Cold Air intake on the RX8 is very good to start with .. you at the very least want another good Cold Air Intake like the AEM or Mazdaspeed. That short ram intake will only suck hot engine bay air and that does suck. Racing beat does the chip flashing thing ... and So does the Cobb AP with the Mazda Maniac Custom Service. I recommend one of those solutions. I may also be putting up my nitrous kit for sale .... if my buddy doesn't install it on his lawn tractor |
I know i will have a cel im not that noob and i dont care about cel along as its not flashing. If u got simple tricks to remove the cel it will be welcome but its not an emergency.
Il buy the the aem for 360$ cause mazda is selling me the mazdaspeed 800$... is chip flash gives a good boost ? is nitrous bad for the engine ? << il do more reading but i dont know why i get flamed for those question, is it that hard for you guys to type on a keyboard ? >> And i read the threads in your signature. |

I'll answer your questions, but do NOT get mad for people giving you advice to actually read and educate yourself. You'll find life a lot simpler if you actually learn to answer your own questions for yourself... CEL- get a cobb AccessPORT to remove, or else use black tape Chip- none. ziltch. zippo. Of course there are chips, but you're talking huge dollar amounts, and only the pro's use them nitrous- like any power increase, it is bad for the engine. However, with proper upkeep and understanding of nitrous, many people here have used it and have had no issues. They just understand and accept that the life of their engine is under threat now, I strongly suggest you start reading every sticky in the sub-forums that apply to questions you have, learn to use the search function (click the google link in my sig) and educate yourself in the basics of the rotary edit: I see I took to long typing... |
Ok rx8soldier thanks for educating me, i have an rx8 and im very happy with it and i do like this forum because we all talk about the same car, so il search more definitly.
Il buy AEM intake and cobb accessPORT and already bought the test pipe, no nitrous for me and no chip. Im considering buying the axial short shift, heard alot of good things about it. |

Well thanks for advice azzuro i will make sure to post feedback on this test pipe if its good or not.
But is a test pipe only suppose to be a piece of soft metal to let the air pass without any trouble ? (need to have a hole for the sensor but it do have one) i mean i could make one myself with a bit of welding skill, test pipe is no big deal, my uncle bought the same for his mazdaspeed3 and it work, no problem. correct me if im wrong |
