CEL Flashed Today

I was going about 120 in 6th when I felt a slight stutter in acceleration, then the CEL started flashing. I let off the gas and slowed down to around 80 and the light went away. No problems since then. Anyone else with the same problem?

I suggest you get it to the dealers immediately.
Misfire? No. Knock? Maybe.
But what happened to me 2 days ago is just like this, and my engine is now dead due to an oil injection failure and resulting seizing of side seals on one rotor.

Better safe than sorry. Get the dealer to check it and call Mazda.

Compression testing may not show a failure. Mine still showed 8.4 to 9.3 while cranking and yet the engine NOW sounds like a cold diesel clattering when it starts.

Watch out for hard starting as this seems to be the giveaway after this.

Question: What brand and weight oil were you using at the time of failure? Also how many miles since the last oil change?

Adding Quaker State 5/20

Changed oil & filter at 3,000km with a Mazda filter and Quaker State 5/20.

I drained the coolers by pushing light compressed air (15psi) in the oil system and managed to extract about 7 litres.
Then refilled. I wanted to do as close to a complete oil change as I could at the time, to get any break-in remnants out of the block and system.

Now at over 5,000km when it failed.

Was scheduled for first dealer service next week, but that will not be needed now, except for inspections, no oil change..

Is this the vehicle you've been using for testing of the fuel/ign control mods? Do you intend to get repaired under warranty? I admire all of the work you've been doing but the question of whether or not I'd be able to (legally and/or ethically) make warranty claims on any engine failure makes me hesitant to consider circumventing the factory settings. Poor as they may be.

Regards

Nothing that I have done is even remotely associated with the oil injection system.
Further, in all that I have done, if it had been a main seal, perhaps caused by detonation, this might be relevant.

However, we did not create knock, and if we had that takes out main seals.

In this case it was diagnosed by Mazda as an oil injection system failure, and it affected side seals on one rotor..

Definitely not a side effect of what I was doing, expcept, perhaps, if you consider spirited use as voiding a warranty.
On a sports car I do not consider that to be the case.

But the point is taken, in general.
If I had babied it then this might not have happened at 5,000km.
It would probably have happened sooner or later, however.

It's been about a week since this happened. I had my oil changed about 250 miles ago, mileage is at 7700 miles now. No hard starts, no change in performance. Are you going to be getting a new engine Canzoomer? And this happened after you were messing with the ECU, correct?

Hi,
I observed the same thing yesterday during a test run with my new RotaryExtreme CAI. Running about 7000RPM (Auto) I noticed just a slight hesitation, the CEL came on and started blinking. I backed off to around 3500 RPM and it went out, not to reappear.

Running a car that fast and getting a hesitation and a CEL is not good. It could have been just a misfire, but I agree with Nubo..get to a dealer ASAP. Tell them you were runnign 120 when it happened. They wont be able to go that fast (legalities and all), but tell them so they can better diagnose problem. Ive heard talk of the injection problem stated above. Check it out.
