Car topped out early

So I was driving last night and while I had my foot to the floor my car topped out at 105 It shifted out of 3rd at about 107 and when it went into 4th it dropped to 105 and stayed there, no cell came up or any other dash lights. I am driving an automatic and it was just in the regular drive mode. Car has 81,000 miles on it and hasn't had any recent major maintenance on it (other than a deflood with new plugs). I also have a yakima roof rack for my mountain bike on top (i know) but I have been over 105 with it on in the past. Any thoughts? Also car is a 2004

Okay, all BS aside, was there any power loss? I don't know where the ATX is limited, but I would imagine it's higher than 105. Did it feel different after that?

He who has not sinned (in this case exceeded the speed limit), cast the first stone.
In all seriousness. The 04 Auto is suppose to be limited to 125mph. While your roof rack will limit the top end, I don't think this is your problem. I would first look at the regular maintenance items (plugs, wires, coils, air filter, .......).
Next would be to take a look at the front inside of the catalytic converter. If it is melted and clogged, your performance is going to be bad. If any of the above are bad, you gas mileage is also going to suffer.
Lastly, you engine could be down on compression. Nothing much you can do about that except get a compression check and, if bad, replace the engine. You are still with in the extended warranty period for the engine core. If you do have a bad engine, it's best not to tell them how you figured it out. Mazda frowns on warranty claims when excessive speed is involved.

wasn't street racing, just a short drive on a open interstate, only went above the speed limit for like 30 seconds. Wasn't planning on topping out my car, just happened way to early.

My automatic hits 130 and is still moving up but I can not afford to go to jail for it so have not completely pushed it all the way.

unless your track means Daytona speedway, I kinda doubt you can hit 130+ for longer than couple seconds.

He is asking about what type of issue be has, not whether it was alright to drive in triple digit numbers. Why must people nit pick like so?

OP - Follow Al's advice, in that order. Hopefully it won't come to step 3, resulting in a new motor!

maybe because enough people are already killed by reckless idiots on public roads and we don't want to continue the cycle by telling this person how to get his car above 130 mph?

Besides public safety, don't forget that one member's warranty was voided by Mazda after he posted here about driving his 8 at speeds above the limit.

That member was Abbid. His warranty was voided in 2005 when Mazda found his post that he took the car over 100 mph. He was having transmission problems and needed it rebuilt or replaced. He is a Moderator, however he rarely posts these days.

True, I remember that incident. Still seems crazy that they were actually able to do that, but not unthinkable. Similar to Mistubishi redflagging evo owners seen at the track/autocross back in the day.

IMHO a simple response answering the question would have been fine, and would not have been advocating how to get his car above 130mph. He was just asking what could have contributed to his loss of power, regardless of whether his testing method was questionable. In the end, good intensions. After all, speeding is dangerous (not only for others, but potentially for your pocketbook)!

The Mazda handles very well at high speeds. It is very easy to drive above the speed limit and not realize exactly how fast you are going.

not trying to figure out how to "get my car to go over 130" just doing some trouble shooting. I don't speed all that often actually, just happens that I was that night and noticed that after I shifted out of third I failed to accelerate any more.

Thanks for the tips alnielsen. Will be sure to check out my regular maintenance items when my car gets out of the body shop (unrelated incident, guy smashed in my grill and part of my front bumper in a parking lot and drove off; $1,000 deductible left me with the tab )
