hmm does teh wiring use that type of male/ female connection anywhere else? you need a male end if im understanding correctly.

I don't know Zoom, from everything I've seen there's no reason to think it's not a std. sealed plug of some kind, and yes it appears to be the male half too, I've seen some std stuff on the web that looks similar but without measurements etc. I can't be sure, guess I'll have to dig in there and pull one out ... sigh

 

Didnt CZ and his crew work on this some when his unit was apparactly causing some coil failures. Prehaps he has some idea about the connectors you need. I know he has a supplier that provided the connector he needed for his plug and play piggyback. Just a thought.

Maurice contacted Tyco directly for the connectors he needed on the PCM end of things. It was difficult and took some politicing for him to buy a lot as small as a few hundred. Tyco supplies in lots of 10,000+. If it is not too late to chime in I may be able to source those coil connectors if you would like. It helps to work in the OEM side of the industry. Team, if you can give me all the numbers/names you see on the coil wiring harness connectors I'll try and get you the matching Weatherpack mates for those connectors. There's no assuming that Tyco supplies all of the plugs/connectors for Mazda. I would look at my own harness but I just put the top-end of my engine back together and I am really not in the mood to pull stuff back apart. At least not until I am ready for the coil upgrade, myself.

BTW, if I remember correctly, the problem CZ had was the interface between the coils and the E-Manage driver for the ignition system.

the problem with pulling one is I'm on the verge of putting it in for outstanding recall work, probably Monday so maybe I can get a coil out and in over the weekend.

 

Understood. If I happen to get decent weather this weekend I'll pull the harness off (if I can get my hands under the manifold) and try to see the OEM supplier name on the plugs. To source the matching connector shouldn't be too hard. Getting them in small lots may be difficult, though. I'll try to do what I can and track them down somehow. I completely understand your motivation on the fabrication and marketing idea. I've been trying, under adverse conditions, to get the lightweight PPF project done for the past year or more. Helping you may be a bit easier for me right now.

Been browing--look at the thread started 6/28/04 by Zoom 44."Burnt coils". maurices crew talked about the coils thermal runaways--how misfires/run lean can cause coil damage. May be of some help--dont know.

I looked at the factory connectors but couldn't glean any info from them just by looking at them. The problem with this is that I have seen vehicles coming down the assembly line with Mexican wiring harnesses and Irish connectors as part of the same harness. The particular plug/connector used on our coils is not altogether unique, though, so I may be able to figure something else out.

One question--if the stock mounting plate is going to be used would it be advantageous to make a grounding cable for the plate itself?

I was wondering the same thing re: grounding, OD. Since the coil cases are plastic I think the brackets serve no conductive purpose. Having a three-wire circuit for each coils adds to my suspicion.

likely cast into the mounts where they bolt down to the plate, most have metal inserts that the mounting bolt fits through and then sandwichs against the bolt head and mounting surface. IMO the grounding is a possible suspect in this issue. The new coils have an additional grounding feature.

I do not intend to reuse the OE plate or location. It's still to be worked out, but my preference is to mount them down close to the plugs with short ignition wires

the OE connector is the holdup for it to be plug & play

otherwise I can cut the wires ahead of the OE connector and install an aftermarket connector pair in each coil control wiring, adapting to that easily instead. This could be implimented immediately, it's just not the first choice solution I wanted to use

 

Team, have you had any like or tried to see if Tyco is the OEM supplier for the coil harness connector? My plant was on shutdown last week so I couldn't call anybody to see what the deal was/is. I will have a chance these next two weeks as they are running again. I'm laid-off so it makes things a bit more difficult than they normally would.

sorry, I'm trying to get back on this, pulled an OE coil yesterday to get the connector dimensions, think I may have seen the connector to fit it when searching way back when, hopefully I can locate it again ...

 

FYI, turns out the LS1 coils will not work with the RX-8 PCM signal. The LS1 coils trigger by grounding the output. The RX-8 PCM is setup to trigger with a low voltage signal. That also means the MSD LS1/LS6 Blaster coils will not work (without modifying the system). Just wanted to clarify this.

I did not get LS1 coils. I'm pretty sure what I have will work once I get the connector issue resolved. Worst case I may try to pin individual wires and pot my own removable connectors using the factory harness connectors as the mold
