Best way to jack up car for midpipe install?

Going to be installing a midpipe soon, just wondering what the best way to raise the car to switch out the midpipe.

what have you guys found easiest?

The higher you can get it off the ground the better, and all 4 wheels off the ground is definitely optimal. You will need room to get leverage to break loose some of the bolts, as it sounds like the cat has not been taken off before.

"break off some bolts" hmmm

The Reverend 11-10-2009 03:40 PM

make sure you have a breaker bar and lots of wd-40...these things will make the swap much easier

jessedrifter 11-10-2009 03:52 PM

hahah

learycd 11-10-2009 03:52 PM

so definately get it on 4 jack stands?

or raise the back to get the back bolts and then the front to get the front bolts and O2 sensor?

jessedrifter 11-10-2009 03:55 PM

breaker bar?

nycgps 11-10-2009 03:56 PM

I use 6 Jackstand

4 for 4 corner's jack point, then I put 2 extra ones around where Im going to work.

cuz you will have like 2 tons of weight above your very fatigue head all the time. better be safe than sorry.

If you can get your hands on 4 jack stands do it that way. It is not pleasant having to squeeze yourself under half of a lifted car for this job.

a bar you stick on the end of your wrench to get more leverage. Learycd if you are doing the swap with a friend and a bolt gets stuck you can have them hold the end of the socket on the bolt straight, then you apply pressure with your foot to loosen it (slowly lol so you don't kick him)

jessedrifter 11-10-2009 04:02 PM

haha thanks rev. thats what i though it was but i just wanted to clarify, cause i dont want to be a n00b

learycd 11-10-2009 04:06 PM

yeah i def worry about 2 tons on top of my head....

have a buddy helping me out so i think we can manage these bolts. i may be able to get access to a lift, but idk how likely that is

"Breaker bar" is another name for flex handle - the non-ratcheting handle you use with a socket. An extension for more leverage is called a cheater bar. A good one that's been passed down from generation to generation is often referred to as the "sacred ceremonial cheater bar."

+1 get a breaker bar.

It makes removing stubborn/stuck bolts like 324081240184 times easier

05 white rx8 11-10-2009 11:16 PM

haha we refer to this as a "Persuasion bar"

also i like the 6 jack stands idea! otherwise take off the rims and put them under the sides of the car. yes if the car falls it will scratch them but its better than being killed

jessedrifter 11-10-2009 11:47 PM

i like to be persuaded lilululuz

I'm going to have to get wider tires. Or go on a starvation diet.

Did mine this week, lifted the back with 2 jack stands, and kept the jack just in front of and under the rear diff in case of emergency. Turned out fine but broke 2 bolts trying to take them out, no big deal autozone was open :) goodluck
