Anyone use one of these to change their oil?
on a piston motor anyway, you cant. the tube needs to get to the lowest point of the oil pool, which is of course in the pan. that is unaccessable from the oil filler cap. unless the renisis has a straight shot from the filler cap to the pan, you cant.

These actually have a hose you stick down the dip stick tube into the pan, but you will still not get all of it. I use a similar, but 12 volt, type pump on my boat where you can not get under the motors. I guess since we are leaving several quarts in there anyways, whats another 1/2 quart? I will still drain mine, but this pump would come in handy in the event you happen to over fill it.
I posted about a similar device several months ago.
Bottom line: it completely drains oil from some cars (e.g. BMW 540i) and almost completely on others (e.g. Honda S2000). On the RX-8 it will drain 4 quarts, which is what you get through the drain plug.
I also did a study regarding accumulated sludge and found there is no appreciable sludge buildup going through the dipstick.

I'd still crack the oil pan bolt unless I epoxied and drilled in a rare earth magnet around the plug to pick up any metal shavings.
