Anyone have Charcoal Canister or evaporative hose problems?

My car is in the shop for the 2nd times in 3 weeks. 3 weeks ago (8/2/04) my CEL came on and I took the car in. I was told that there was a firmware corruption problem, in which they reflashed my PCM. They kept my car for 4 days (8/5/04).

That following monday (8/9/04) the CEL came back on. Given my schedule that week, I wasn't able to take my car in until (8/19/04). The dealership checked for existing codes thinking it might have been PCM related, but that wasn't the case. The code returned had to do with the emissions system. They found a leak in the evaporative hose, but given they haven't seen this issue before, they contacted mazda to see what exactly they suggested. Mazda suggested that they replace the evaporative hose and the charcoal cansiter that attaches to it for safe measure. So my dealership replace the 2 mentioned items. My heartache with this fix is that to get to those parts the rear differential had to be removed.

The dealership is still not convinced that this will solve my CEL coming on but they followed mazda's directions. They are keeping my car over the weekend to see if the CEL comes back on.

What a rough couple of weeks ? Has anyone else seen anything like this??

I found this thread while searching for "charcoal canister". I installed a Typhoon K&N cold air intake on my AT 8 and they forgot to include the "charcoal canister" and bracket that is shown in the installation pictures. I assembled everything but had to do without it. The car runs fine although I notice very small power gains. I also had to leave out the stock plastic box that is held on by a hose clamp between the air cleaner and throttle body. I imagine it has a similar purpose as it seems to be replaced by the (non-existent) K&N charcoal canister. Can someone THAT KNOWS please tell me the purpose of the stock plastic box I was referring to and also of the charcoal canister, and the possible long-term effects of omitting these parts. Thanks in advance.
