8 not running smooth..

Hey guys.. i've been noticing that my rx8 is not smooth when u press on the gas or release it at any rpm... But once u keep ur foot constant there is no hesitation or "jerk" it accelerates fine. It's only if u get off the gas then accelerate again, the car will initially "jerk" then everything fine after that.. Is this normal? This happens at any RPM from low end to even more so high end. It even happens when i get off the gas also.. My FD didn't do this though.. What u guys think? It just seems like this car is very "jerky" to me.. I hope i explained this well..

FYI, I did plugs, wires, and ignition coils 5k miles ago...

Sounds like bad engine mounts.

There is a TSB for this problem, motor mounts. What is your miles and transmission type. Please give us all your info on car. Should be covered no charge.

I have a 2004 6spd with 40k miles... When i took the car in for the plugs, wires, and coils they ran the vin and he said all recalls were done on the car.. Not sure if the engine mounts were done..

The bulletin for bad motor mounts states that the problem occurs in 3rd gear at less than 3k rpm.. however, mine occurs at all rpm's in any gear.. I'm gonna make an appt w/ Mazda next week.. Hopefully its the motor mounts and nothing more..

TSB is not recall.

Recall is *required*

TSB is something that they will do ONLY if
- the customer complains
- if the dealership cares about the customer and check it themselfs. (VERY DOUBTFUL)

Do you mean like, as you step on the gas, regardless of gear or rpm, the increase in speed is initially a small jerk. As opposed to say any other car, it kinda "eases" into the speed when you apply gas.

I also notice this car doesn't coast too well. No matter what gear or rpm i'm at, when I let off the gas, the rpms drop quickly (making the car jerk the moment i let off the gpedal). Thus making me immediately add throttle, which makes the car "jerk" again. In other cars quickly letting go of the gas pedal would not do this. Because of this I tend to always feather the gas while daily driving, constantly, just to avoid this jerky car movement. It's quite annoying, and would love to know if it could be fixed.

I noticed the jerky feeling after having bought a 2004 6MT in January. I had just attributed it to the rotary and endeavoured to be smoother on the gas pedal. At one point I went into the dealership with the motor mount TSB. They did a visual inspection of the mounts and a test drive, but were unable to replicate the problem according to the TSB. So they sent me on my way. Today, however, I was idling in neutral at a stoplight. I noticed the RPMs drop down around 500 and the engine almost stalled before the RPMs popped back up again. So I'm once again thinking the mounts might be bad.

Do bad motor mounts have anything to do with idle dropping like you say? Cause if so, then my car def has bad motor mounts.. Almost every time i'm at a red light, my idle drops to around 500 then catched itself also.. I know that bad motor mounts make the car idle rough but didnt know it can cause the idle to drop also..

Targatheory.. yes thats what i mean.. As soon as i step on the gas the car is jumpy or jerky for the initial time then its fine.. In contrast, when i drive my g-friend's TSX, once u step on the gas its smooth even initially there is no "jerk"

maybe you have to clean your MAF sensor? Do you have a K&N air filter or any aftermarket intake?

if it shakes really bad when idle + A/C on, 99.9995% chance is that you have some bad mounts.

Please do not ask me how I know !

Just an update:

My car is actually going in for service on Wed. I printed out the TSB on the motor mounts and the one for the sqeeky breaks (yea i know, this one is gonna be hard to get them to fix.. but worth a try). I'm gonna give both reports to the tech so he knows i've done my research.. We'll see what happens..

I am taking my car in next Monday for the exact same problem, and am afraid I will get the same runaround.

-Vibration at idle getting much worse recently
-Jerking so badly with throttle changes so badly that I can not use second gear in a parking lot at low speeds; the whole drivetrain just feels loose
-The jerking is present in all gears, but not quite as harsh. There is nothing magically different in 3rd gear below 3000 rpms
-My idle rpm's occasionally drop down to 600-700 then slowly recover. Someone on here theorized that the engive vibration can actually trigger the knock sensor, leading to timing retard and near stalls.

they didn't do a test drive, just visual inspection or maybe they never go to it.

Its at Mazda in Ramsey.. When i first bought the car i took it to the dealer in Lodi but didn't like how there were too many young mechanics there.. Just looked like a bunch of kids working there.. I then took it to Ramsey for my last service and now for this one..
