30000 mile check-up: Do I need all these things they're trying to sell me?

I took my '8 taken in to the dealership for its first 30,000 mile maintenance. It had various things I know had to be done, such as an oil change and a flash upgrade.

I scanned in their 30kM service plan and what it entails. As you can see for the RX-8 it is $279.95. The guy also highly recommended a fuel injection flush ("to clean out the carbon deposits") ($129.95), and replace manual transmission fluid ($49.95). I want to know if I really need these things or if it's just an easy sell for the stealership.

These come with the 30k maintainence package

These are on the same page but not included. If you see anything I should consider, please let me know!

Thanks for the advice!

You need plugs, coils, differential fluid, tranny fluid, and probably cooling flush. You can probably could of done some of that yourself, try at the plugs and save yourself $100. I would have them do the diff fluid though, you need a little pump thing for that and diff fluid is the worse smell in the world IMO. But yeah, to answer your question, and I am not exactly sure what all they did, but they did not tell you anything wrong. I wouldn't be too sure about the injector cleaner... I would say that is a judgement call. They pay about $15 for the cleaner... Did you ask to look at your tranny fluid, or did he say it was clean?

I thought 279 was for everything, that would be cheap. Most cars are about $600 at a mech. or dealer for this check up.

I would say no to the fuel injector flush for 129.00. local autoparts store for less than $15.00.

They haven't done any of those things until I tell them to. I'm just not sure it's worth $280. My lights are functioning fine, for instance, and so are my battery terminals - I don't need those checked. The only things I think MAY have value are:

* Change engine oil (I'm getting that done anyway)
* Inspect brake system
* Complete inspection of engine cooling system
* Inpect all fuel lines
* Replace engine air filter
* Tighten bolts and nuts on chassis and body
* Inspect drive belt tension and condition (j/k)

The plugs you mentioned are another $159 and I don't think I need 'em. I've already gotten the hard start upgrade.

So, how important are those things listed above? There's no way $280 is a good deal - the dealership is NEVER a good deal!!

Appreciate the input

You need plugs and coils unless they were replaced for the hard start upgrade, I don't know the details of that.

De-carboning the engine is not a bad idea. Paying the dealer to do it for you is. Get some Seafoam (search the site) and do it yourself.

Letting the dealer change your gear oil is probably worth the cash.

Well, If it makes you feel better Mazda Killeen wanted $900 and Mazda Temple wanted $470. I think Id pay $280 for 30,000 mile service.

I just did my 30k mile service today the dealer wanted to charge me for a bunch of crap i do not need. I ended up getting a tranny flush and the coolant flush (which i think they don't flush anything out for that) The guy also told me that they did the Mazda certified inspection etc.etc the total price $217 plus tax. I'm pretty sure i could of taken it to any mechanic shop and gotten it done for half that.

My Stealership wanted to charge me $600 for the 30000 mile service... did it all myself (except for plugs and coils, which i will do soon) for less than $100 including buying Redline fluids and the pump to change trans/diff fluid.

HMMMMMM, I had mine done a few months back. I need to pull that paperwork and see if the coils and stuff were done. I don't recall that mentioned and it was right at $500.00..

What is this hard start upgrade? We're supposed to have a hard winter and unfortunately she doesn't have a house of her own yet.

Plugs arent $160. Check the vendors at the top of the main page. A few of them have deals on the plugs. I'm also pretty sure I get a coupon every once and a while that has everything but the air filter and brake fluid change, and its like $45 http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...dealerId=34405 . The injector cleaning sounds like a total ripoff as well.

Its funny when i mentioned the diff fluid the service guy was like o we don't do that here, in fact that's not a necessary thing to do at 30k. What a dick, yea as far as spark plugs and the decarbonization of the engine goes i would not pay one penny to let the dealership do it, way to expensive and you don't really know what there doing to your car.

rofl ? its totally not worth it.

change engine oil & filter ? shitz do it urself for 30 bux if synthetic oil, 15 bux for mineral.

inspect brake system ? it takes no more than 30 seconds to visually inspect them, check to see if brake fluid is full, look at the pads to see if they're more than 1/2 way down, u dont even need to take ur wheels off to check.

inspection of cooling system? another ROFL ! just check and see if ur coolant is full. Most coolant can survival at least 5 years.

inspect fuel lines ROFL ! there is nothing to inspect on fuel lines, either they work or they leak.

replace engine air filter, you need to do this only if its dirty, maybe every 15K miles ?

tighten bolts on the body ? Why would u need this? bolts wont go lose unless you touched them b4 and forgot to tighten it back to spec.

Inspect drive belt tension and condition (j/k) - u're not serious right? if u never touch the belt, just check and see if theres any crack on the belt.

these check up is totally not worth it. ROFL.
