15000 Mile Service

I just reached 13500 miles and took my car in for an oil change...they're saying I should do the 15k mile service now which comes out to around $400....they also said I should replace all four of my tires!

Anyway the tires I'll probably get somewhere else, but what exactly do they do at the 15k service that adds up to $400?

I would ask them. Not to be synical, but it sounds like they are trying to make $400.00 from you when you might not be in need of any service at all.

If the car is performing to your satisfaction, then routine service (like the oil change you had) should suffice. Things like rotating tires, checking belts/hoses, toppping up fluids should not add up to $400.00. Do a search or ask some of the more senior members who post here what they might do at 15,000 miles.

Cheers and G/L,

Ed

hmm...CLEAN air filter, inspect lines and lube hinges, change oil filter and oil. oh yea...and rotate tires...which costs 20 minutes.

$400? ha. Do it yourself and keep the receipts for $30.

funny.

lots of good stuff in that silly owners manual. i hope you read it some time.. you take the time to respond to my post, but dont want to look at the real thing???

what if someone said you need to change you plugs and air filter??? how would you know different? hey reading the owners manual just saved you ~ 300 bucks.

in the long run it saves everyone some time...

here is a useful link. and does not require the long walk to your car to open your glove box..

Thanks swoope...maybe there should be some kind of a welcome notice (preferably a popup, so nobody will miss it) when logging into the forum saying something like:

"make sure you read the ENTIRE manual and exhaust all other search methods before posting any questions!"

That would have saved you the trouble of reading questions.

Also on a side note...the manual doesn't actually tell you how much the service actually costs....I didn't read the entire thing though, so maybe I'll get to that page eventually.

Cost is up to whoever is selling you the service. When you get to that page in the manual, you'll find that at 15,000 miles you change the oil and oil filter, clean the air filter, and check all of the things you should be checking more or less regularly.

Once you see that, you'll be able to judge for yourself whether it's worth $400.

Scheduled maintenance services at dealers tend to be way overpriced. I think credit card companies help them figure out what to charge. The last time I brought a car in for one was in 1980, when I took a VW Rabbit in for its 1000 mile checkup. As I recall, I paid $40 for that, and all I got was an oil and filter change. At the time, $10 was pretty much the going rate if you went to a gas station and said "change my oil and filter."

Right that's why I'm asking...I don't know how much people tend to charge for different kinds of service. All I was asking was what people thought about this $400 charge and if it was generally viewed as a ripoff....which I guess it is.

It's just a pet peve of mine that vets on forums tend to tell people to go do a search or read this or that when quetions are asked...when people post on forums that are in my area of expertise I don't tell them to do a google search and stop asking dumb questions....unless of course they start getting out of hand.
