I have a strange problem, i have an 04 6mt GT with 42k miles, I hear alot about whining on deceleration or when the clutch is out , etc, but mine whines loud from shifting 1-2, and does not make any noise through all other gears.... is this 1-2 going out? should i bring it in for service or is this normal? it doesn't have any problems shifting into it, but makes a nasty whine.

 

Seeing that your warranty is about to go out at 50K thats the first thing i would do is take it in to the dealer for a full check up, who knows what they might find, now if im down shifting mine whines down is this the same sound that you are talking about? if so when you are shifting up this is not normal at all !

............. yeah my 8 whines too when I down shift. Idk if its normal or not but the car actually yelled (screached) when I down shifted to 3rd onet time. I mean i was driving on the fast side, but normally wouldnt the car just kind of pull back and/ or jump?

 

well.... the car is being garage stored for the winter here in Wisconsin on Sunday. i will have to take it into the dealer in the springtime (im sure my warranty wont be up, its a late 04). Sunday is my only day off for a while so it's got to go that day, like i said, its a smooth shift to second but its just that weird noise that happens. Maybe ill get a new tranny come springtime, either way ill get it check out cuz I'm keeping this car, unlike my last 5 cars.

 

Is this your first Rotary car? That sould be the sound of your Engine. Go back to your dealer and test drive a AT or MT youll see.

 

I know what a rotary sounds like... and if the rotary engine knows to make a different sound when only going into 2nd, that would be pretty fu**ed up. I'm not an idiot, this is the trans making the noise. My s2000 had a whining gear noise and it needed a new trans, that thing grinded into second at redline almost every time until the new one was installed, but those early models were known to have trans issues. With how many rx8 trans i've heard about being replace, I don't doubt that mine will be replaced in spring once I bring it in to the dealer.

Mine wines only in second when I apply pressure to it with my hand while in gear...

 

Nope, it doesn't. It only whines when I apply pressure downward. Like, pulling it towards myself in second gear.
