*5* Speed JDM Transmission to replace current 6 speed
*5* Speed JDM Transmission to replace current 6 speed
Hello everyone, my 2004 has the tranny synchros starting to go out (grinds when shifting in high gear on 3rd). I found a local seller that claims to have a 5 speed transmission. I asked him to take pictures of the stickers and plates so i can confirm it's indeed a 5 speed and not a 6 speed transmission. My question is this, if it is a 5 speed transmission...that to my understanding came in the 4 ports manuals outside the U.S. - will it work with my current setup? Do I need to buy a new flywheel and clutch kit or will it bolt right on as the 4 port manual rx8's were for the series 1 from my understanding.
Bolt right in. Make sure you align the PPF properly after install per the workshop manual. OEM throwout bearing and clutch slave from the 6 speed are compatible and work on the 5 speed. Replace the pilot bearing while you are in there.

Oil matters a lot. What are you using in the 6 speed?
Thank you good sir for giving me the info I needed. As far as the wiring - connects right on as well?
I would try MTL or thinner. I use MT-LV as do others, with almost miraculous results. You might not need to replace the transmission at all.
I found MT90 to be the worst of all the lubes I ran in both s1 and s2 transmissions, FWIW. I had a weak 5th in the s1 and I don't anymore with MT-LV. That was almost 100k miles ago.

Thank you for the info, I had seen a forum about the MT-LV - I agree it's worth giving it a shot.

Hard to imagine it could get better, but I may end up testing these next time.
Its in my REW swap that is getting just about ready to hit the road, so I will see if it was the transmission bucking.
I'm running MT-90.
I've used MT-90 in the S1 6MT and the S1 5MT JDM and I like it. I am in SoCal (Bakersfield) and get a range of temps through the year including some serious summer temps. If that's helpful feedback.

I drained the MT90 and added the MT-LV. Along with this; I also bleed the clutch master cylinder as I was feeling the shifts a bit rough. The MT-LV definitely feels more smooth but it also has made me realize that a new tranny is in the near future as my 3rd gear grinds even worse with this stuff at high rpms shifts. I plan to run this stuff from the get go on my next tranny though. Also, I noticed that I have to bleed the clutch master cylinder once a year when I feel the shifter is a bit rough to get into gear. Once I bleed it, it goes back to buttery smooth shifts. Does anyone else experience this? At my last tranny install, I put a new clutch slave cylinder and braided steel hose. Would a new clutch master cylinder be needed eventually or is it normal to have to bleed it that frequently?
