Strange "scraping" sound

Hey Guys. My 2007 RX8 has been making a strange "scraping" sound when ever I shift from park to drive or from park to reverse. It sounds like two pieces of metal scraping together for a quick second, kind of like the sound when you are scraping on a steep driveway. It has done this for a while now and thought I'd ask here before I hassle with the dealership. Any idea what it could be?

I hate to say this my fellow 8 owner but your 07' RX8 may have a transmission problem. If you hear noise/clunking sound when u change gears coming from your vehicle’s transmission or your shifting is delayed, it may indicate that transmission parts are hitting together "abnormally". Normally functioning transmissions are virtually free of noise, when clean transmission fluid is lubricating the moving parts. I recommend u to take this 8 to the dealership ASAP, before your CEL comes out. Is your 8 brand new when u bought it or used?

either your gears are messed up, or maybe there might be something loose, in your transmission, go tell the dealer right away before what ever the hell is loose in there knocks some more **** up and blow your tranny

Hey guys, thanks for the response. The 8 is brand new and it only happens when I shift from park, but no other time. Forgive me for my ignorant question, but is the gear box located right below the shifter, or up by the engine? The sound seems like it is coming from the front of the car by the engine, but I'm not really sure. Perhaps, Ill have the dealership take a look at it this weekend.

the gear box is located under the shifter ofcourse, a little left offset if I'm not mistaken, or was it right........damn I cant remember

anyhow, I know what you are talking about now, shifting from park and all, its this squeeky kind of sound and eeeerrghhhhhh thinging until u put it in gear right? that is possibly because you put it between P and R for too long, I had that happen too, but when I took out my tranny and put her back with new ATF it was gone, and yours is an 07 justt like mine, so nothing to worry about, after a couple thousand miles, your gears will be looser and the scraping will be gone, its jsut tight

One thing that I forgot to mention, which is probably pretty important, is that the scraping does not happen as I shift. It happens after I shift from park. It normally happens when I am in reverse and backing up and right before I shift into drive, the sound occurs. Any ideas?

hmm, gear bearings still tight? is your car bought new? or has it have previous owner? I know what you are talking about, my car had that for the first 3-4k then it went away and never came back again, so I wouldn't worry about it, but if it starts to interfere with your driving in anyway, then you should check the AT fluid first, then go to the dealer because there might be something wrong with your gears and bearing, or maybe bad mounting or assembly

I've had my car since 17k miles currently has 45k miles. If I'm shifting to drive from park or reverse I have to stop the car completely, wait a second or two, then start moving forward, like the car is slow to go into gear. If you rev it before it kicks into gear after you shift to drive it will make a clinking sound back there like the rear is slow to catch on.The dealer told me that the rx8 transmission is slow at shifting. Could they be BSing me? I still have like 3k miles of warranty left so I wonder if I should take it to another dealer.

Hmmmm. That doesn't sound right to me. I would have it checked at a few different dealers before the warranty is up. Maybe the sound coming from the rear has something to do with the rear differential. But I am not sure. Id get it checked out.

I could pinpoint if it was the differential or not if I knew more about what the differential did. From what I hear I can tell it tries to grab on when I shift into drive and sometimes it slips?

Most AT's I have had will do that. Always come to a complete stop when shifting from P-R-D or you'r tranny will not last long.
I see people all the time pulling out of a parking spot in R and well the car is still rolling back pull into D and go! I'm like wow. I'll never buy a used AT. Thats why I got mine with 12miles on her.

I am one of those bastards who does do that, that is why I am on my second tranny (thankyou mazda) and this is my 3rd flex plate and 2nd clutch pack (never use a "godly" clutch pack from those mustangs, they ******* suck dick, I'm not kidding, the OEM mazda ones lasts longer)

no, actually, all cars man, you should stop them completely, because it puts unnecessary strains on the gear, but then again, I'm underwarranty

^Dude I would not talk about how you treat your car with all the Mazda people floating around on here.
They might tag your a$$ and get you with abuse next time you need a new Tranny.
