As the title inquires, generally how similar are the automatic transmissions between the most recent Rx7 and our Rx8?

Curious about it since I think I've seen it mentioned before but I think it was referring to the MT transmissions. Also search came up with a billion threads..

 

There are some similarities but no cigar - internals differ greatly on the 4at and mountings are different on the 6at. Keep your eye on Black Halo Racing as they are developing an at upgrade.

I guess you saw where I was going with the question.. I noticed there is a lot of aftermarket for RX7 performance and figured we might be able to get by with a upgraded trans specced for 7's.. oh well.

The 4-speed JATCO auto box in the FD RX-7 was designed in its basic format back in the late 80's.

Cars to recieve the same JATCO box (albiet slight variations to suit the car & governing electronics) that I know of are.

HC 929 (89-91)
HD 929 (92-95)
HE 929 (96-02)

JC Cosmo "13B-REW only" (90-95)

FC RX-7 "Series-5" (89-91)

FD RX-7 (92-02)

As for the FE RX-8. I know the 6-speed manual is from the NB MX-5. Perhaps the auto is also from the NB series-MX-5.

Since there is no relation between RX-7 + RX-8 manual gearbox's, one suspects the same with the auto.
