Highest Mileage A/T Only

So I've looked around the forums quite a lot and I've seen threads like this and wondered, what's the best running auto? I've seen a lot of premature engine failures and a lot of people say the autos have some of the worst track record. Well I say SHUN TEH NON BELIEVERS. I've got an 04 that's nearing the 93k mark and it still has a lot of pep to it. I think the real reason of starting this thread is to show the auto can hit past the 100k mark and beyond just like any other.

invasion08 02-23-2011 09:14 PM

First engine 30k
Second engine 35k (65k on the car)
Third engine still going (102k on the car)

blakem2008 02-23-2011 09:58 PM

first engine -98,000
second - 122,000 and still going strong..

slvrstreak 02-24-2011 06:16 AM

98K on my '06 AT
no problems so far

adamci24 02-24-2011 08:17 AM

First engine failed at 59k
Second Failed after 10 miles (lol weird I know)
Third Engine going strong at 65k...

09Factor 02-24-2011 08:56 AM

First engine replaced at 21k (bad housing)
Second still going at 55k and runs fine. It has spent 30k of it's 34k life boosted.

PeteInLongBeach 02-25-2011 01:10 PM

The issue I see with the a/t is that the engine rarely revs to a healthy rpm unless you manually paddle shift it. I virtually always shift my a/t manually for this reason, and due to the extra tall overdrive, I never engage 6th unless I'm going to be cruising at least 75 mph (and even then the engine is only turning about 2500 rpm).

The upside of the a/t is the car is quieter at cruising speeds, the fuel mileage is a bit better, and (all other things being equal) the motor should get less wear due to fewer revolutions. BUT, gotta keep the carbon cleared out !

JTtheDude 02-25-2011 03:07 PM

Just passed 100K on mine, first engine died at 89K running strong ever since!

jgrnslt 03-07-2011 06:43 PM

I've got 93K on my 2005 RX8 AT. Never had a problem!

Figs 03-07-2011 06:50 PM

Hit 93k a few days ago. Most I've had to do was replace my SSV.

One thing I forgot to mention to everyone. What fluids do you run? 5-30 oil, premium gas shell or chevron

Imphaetus 03-08-2011 09:28 AM

1st engine at 1134
2nd engine at 14500
3rd engine at 38000
4th engine at 65000
4th ones the charm so far with 90000 on the car

5-30w synth Winter and 10-30w synth Summer.
Gas is what ever is the least expensive. All Az gas sucks, and I run Idemitsu pemix.:yumyum:

slvrstreak 03-09-2011 06:42 AM

5-20w synthetic
rot gut premium gas...better gas milage every time i swear haha
20.5 - 21.5mpg everytime :)

Define rot gut lol, is that like that stuff you find at those sketchy liquor stores in the ghetto?

slvrstreak 03-09-2011 11:15 AM

thats the stuff!
contaminated water and skunk liquor run-off helps the MPG??? :dunno:
hahaha

Hi,

I'm a new owner of an '06 A/T Shinka. Should I add an additive, such as Z-Max? Any response appreciated. Thanks

StacyT 03-25-2011 01:56 PM

I've got 73K on mine. I've done all the recommended maintenance. I am going to change the coils, plugs, & wires this weekend. Only problem I've really had that I could not get fixed with the motor is the rough idle & some power loss at low RPM's that started around 45K, and I hope that the coils will fix it.

rev8 03-26-2011 01:55 AM

74500k on first motor
4k on new motor

what happened there?

decently strong at 87k right now, despite people claiming that 04 4speed auto should have never existed :icon_tup:

Figs 03-28-2011 07:12 PM

Additive? For what? The most I've ever heard people use would be idemetsu premix (think that's what its called) other than that from what I know everything else is snake oil.

superhypered 03-28-2011 10:30 PM

i thought royal purple was just oil..? idk i wouldnt do it, just cuz

Dr.8 03-29-2011 06:10 PM

thanks guys... just trying to learn about the rotary.

Panunu 04-01-2011 06:32 AM

Id recommend adding pre-mix with every, or every other fillup (do some research on the forum about it as far as how much to add, etc.) Other than that id stay away from crazy additives..i run some water wetter or something in my radiator in hot weather, and get some seafoam in the engine every 15k or so. Get a spray bottle and squirt seafoam right in the two small nipples you can see on the exhaust manifold coming off the engine to keep that carbon out. Big killers are Oil not lubricating the engine well enough, (use thicker oil, premix, Sohn adapter). and carbon build up in the engine. Make sure to stick your AT in manual mode and redline it every day/other day. All this has been keeping my new engine strong for the past 50k or so. Just my recommendation on things...

Wig92 04-09-2011 03:06 PM

^^still my favorite looking 8 on the forum

05 4 port. just hit 76k. still running strong, has had its issues

since ive owned it (56k) ive replaced starter, coils, plugs, alternator, and belts. ignition isnt its stong point haha

Razz1 04-11-2011 07:37 PM

Z MAx has allot of solvent in it.

Bluematt 04-12-2011 05:26 PM

2004 GT 102k miles and still running strong, on it's third motor..

First one died at 40k.
Second one died at 75k.

However the first two engines were from when I did not own the car.

foo77 05-29-2011 05:28 AM

134k here and still good with original engine registered 2003 ;)

09Factor 05-29-2011 09:19 AM

Pretty cool! Maybe because you don't have the Us of A EPA regs to worry about.
just a guess

foo77 05-29-2011 09:55 AM

actually bought it used from Japan in 2005 with 4k mileage on it :)

van 06-07-2011 04:45 PM

153,000 KM's on first motor. Currently 7,000 KM's on second.

gwilliams6 06-07-2011 05:31 PM

Hey I have owned seven different rotary Mazdas since 1973, and raced three of them. I now have a 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8. In all my rotaries, street and race, i have used a premix solution. My favorite one, which I have used with success on street and track, and am using in my RX8 is Pettit Racing's Protek-R Synthetic Fuel Lubricant (made for rotaries) www.pettitracing.com PN#0100-4. I put in about 4 oz. per tankful for normal fun driving, and more for racing .

In all my years and easily a million rotary miles driven, I have NEVER had an engine failure, ever, even in my racing. Premix is one of the keys.

Arky8 06-14-2011 11:22 PM

64k miles total
32k on first motor (stall/no start)
14k on second motor (oil leak)
third motor going strong since.

I have been hesitant to try premix, but may give it a shot. I need this 04 to make it to 2014 so I can get a next gen RX :).

gwilliams6 06-15-2011 10:30 AM

Man if you want to help your engine to last, you need premix, whether the Pettit racing brand or some other brand. If you hesitate, your engine will suffer, and you may be replacing another one. Rotaries need this for longevity, I know this from nearly 40 yrs of rotaries. I have owned an RX3, two RX4s (both sedan and coupe, raced the modified coupe), all three generations of RX7; first gen RX7 (later modified and raced), second gen RX7 turbo II (later modified and raced), third gen RX7 FD Twin-Turbo (later modified), and now both a 40th Anniversary RX8 and a Mazdaspeed3 GT (both fitted with Mazdaspeed Cold Air Intakes). I have NEVER had a rotary engine failure on seven different rotary cars since 1973, and premix is an essential part of proper upkeep to make the rotary last.

Just do it !

Figs 06-15-2011 12:25 PM

^ or maybe its the luck of the draw? Gonna hit 97k soon  gotta fix a small leak in a line and then go get a compression test soon.

gwilliams6 06-16-2011 07:37 AM

After nearly 40 years and over a million total rotary miles on the street and the track, luck of the draw has NOTHING to do with it. It's all about knowing how to care for your rotary engine. Period !

Soooo finally hit the 100k club :D: No new problems other than the same oil leak. I'll dig in there one of these days but the cabin smell at stops doesn't bother me too much. The cat is finally dying(barely passed smog) and the tranny is starting to get a little weak. Other than that she still runs like a champ. Here's the pudding

welcome to the club....mine must have an oil "leak" too :uhh:

Mazurfer 09-05-2011 09:34 AM

Help a girl get hers running several years ago.
It was an 04 with 140k(original) miles on it.
The car was severely neglected, but another member and I got it running and all was good until she totaled it about two weeks after we fixed it.
I'll have to go find the thread to insure I got that mileage right.

Yup..................had over 140k on it, was one of my better moments helping someone out that really needed it. Takes till about page 2 or 3 before I really start to get involved though. https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/rx8-sale-needs-new-motor-repaired-update-163605/

BTW.............do some searches as this is infact a repost, there are other threads high mileage threads. :p:

Are you sure? Cause last time I checked there were I think 2 high mileage threads, 1 kinda died, the other is everywhere lol. I dont think either is auto exclusive :) besides the auto forum needs some action haha

efy 12-12-2011 09:54 PM

116,000- '05 with stock engine and transmission- no problems.

Jake33 12-13-2011 11:42 PM

^ legendary.

RX8 Dyno Dan 04-16-2012 10:42 AM

I have an 04 GT with 115K miles that runs flawlessly, engine replaced at 88K. I find this website so helpful and I have done several of the DIY recomendations. BTW: What a great car!

jordanjerome 10-13-2012 05:38 PM

05 180,000 miles
total of 3 motors

mods
Hymee Supercharger
light weight rotors
carbon fiber drive shave from precision shaft technologies
custom intake using parts from Injen, and Racing Beat.

wnbowman 10-25-2012 07:47 PM

06 Sinka

86k on first and only motor. Seems to still run strong for an automatic. Full stock, no mods yet.

Used to run any premium gas that was cheaper, now run nothing but Shell vPower (93). That has made a huge difference in how this car runs. I would not believed anyone who had told me otherwise.

Anyway, I get 24-25mpg cruising on hiways +70mph (minimum LOL) and usually 20-21 for my daily commute.

Figs 10-25-2012 10:08 PM

Just hit 118k today, still running strong but I did realize I have a bit more of a smell of burnt carbon when I get up to 6-7k. Time for an oil change btw :D:
