he took some stuff out and had a machine shop make replacements from a tougher metal..

it was good enough to allow enough power through to snap the rear half=shafts

The FD tranny is longer than the RX-8 though. Here is the thread about some one putting a FD tranny in a 8. Post 84
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ny#post1053996

**EDIT actually it looks not to be longer it just that the shifter sit further back.**

Can you move the shifter in a FD tranny?

i dunno. i always think the shifters in cars are too far forward, anyway. me = american = i sit farther back than a 5'1 asian dood.

i didn't notice them being 3 inches off. i'll go measure and take pics sometime soon.

Okay so for all the people with tranny failures...is it one particular part that has failed for most people, or is it just random things? I've read about transmission failures but no one ever specifies what's broken.

Maybe g-force transmissions could come up with something? Including a taller 6th, ideally.

Just out of curiosity, do any other cars share our Aisin transmission? I kinda doubt g-force or whoever would develop parts for one low-volume car like the 8.

If you guys want to get REALLY serious about transmissions, you can spend about $6,000 or so for a custom built T-56 with any gear ratio you want. Adapters to bolt these up to rotaries already exist. Of course you'll also need a different clutch, starter, driveshaft, etc. Then you'll have to figure out the speedometer as the RX-8 tranny doesn't use a cable but rather has a sensor installed that the other trannies don't have. If you could pay for this and get it all worked out, you'll never break another transmission again regardless of what you do to the engine.

EDIT: I now see the link above to G-Force. That's about how much it would cost through them for a custom setup if you are lucky. Not cheap but very nice.

Im asian and Im 6", so whats your point ?

The shifter sits closer to the front for a reason. and it has nothing to do with a person's height. Your comment is not even funny.

oooow, i think i hit your soft spot. sorry dood, i meant no offense.

fact: the average japanese guy is shorter than the average american guy
fact: it's a japanese car.

i may have illustrated that point in a non-politically correct way, but i meant no offense. stop being so hyper-sensative.

stickman,
18k miles, car hit in rear. make an offer because me = poor. if you want it as a spare, gimme a call so i can help plug it in if you blow yours up. if you just blew yours up, tow that **** up here and i'll plug it in for you. the one i'm definately trying to sell. the other one, i'm not sure yet. might use it, might reallocate the funding for more fd toys.

I know for a fact that average japanese guys are shorter than american guys. oh yes its a japanese car, but does that mean you have the right to call whoever a "dood" ? what makes you so uber special ? and/or superior to anyone else ?

Oh yes lets not forget you're actually talking about a car that was created by a bunch of "doods"

and oh, Im hyper-"SENSITIVE" ? maybe, maybe not.

(ok off topic. Im out)

hmm... guess it's all how you drive then. i've yet to see a turbo-renny, 6-speed powered fd. i may give that a try if i can dig up a spare car.
