RX8 lover mechanically illiterate. STS Turbo

Ok so I have no idea where I should post this; hope this isthe spot. I have decided I want to put a turbo kit in my 8. This is the 2nd 8 I have owned. I had to sell my other one long ago and used to be on here alot. I can't remember how to use my old login so I created a new one. Just recently moved back to Houston from Bartlesville OK. I want to go with a STS turbo kit and find that they only have a universal one for an *. I am in love with my 8 and know that I want a little more umpfh in my 8 but I just happened to be lost when I read all these posts. I was wondering if anyone could help me get a parts list together of everything I would need aside from the single turbo sts kit. I don't know about things like management systems and meth stuff and blah blah blah. I have little time on my hands to learn since I travel alot. I am actually in Dallas atm in a parking lot stealing wifi from home depot lol. I want to find a mechanic or shop that has the know how to give me a price on the install and tuning. It sounds noobish but honestly I have tried to understand as much as possible and looked at previous posts about sts kits with ne clarification to this simple guy. I asked sts if a single turbo or twin turbo kit would be better and they suggested to invest that money in a single turbo and have it tuned. Any advice and input would be appreciated. I basically would need to have someone hold my hand and give me the "grocery" list to what all I would need. I would love to be able to put out 400 hp but who has that kind of money lol. I want to put out around 350hp if possible. Would a larger turbo be a possibility? See....I am lost but know what I want to accomplish lol. Thank you all in advance. For those I knew before my old log was psyc604303.

Being mechanically illiterate as you say the best option for you would be to hand your whole car over to someone who has proven results in doing this MAJOR modification . If you think you can buy a kit have some random mechanic install it and tune it without major issues you are dreaming .

BHR and Turblown are both doing good work at the moment .

psychobeta604303 03-10-2011 03:12 PM

No no no... sorry I didn't clarify myself. I only want an experienced Mazda Rotary mechanic in Tx to handle this project. I will not give it to anyone less than that. I was merely asking what all I would need for such a project; I am working to start acquiring the needed items and wanted to get an estimate of what I need and how much it will cost, as well as a reputable mechanic in or near Houston. I would love to learn about it myself but never have the time to focus. Plus, I would hate to try and screw up my car lol. Sorry for the confusion.

rotary performance in Garland tx is the local shop in Dallas.

9krpmrx8 03-10-2011 03:20 PM

So, you want us to tell you everything that is involved in fitting a universal remote mount turbo system? Dude, seriously?

wcs 03-10-2011 03:23 PM

So let me get this straight.

You want someone to breast feed you through a list of parts required to get a 350hp RX8?

Soooo you haven't even tried looking at other turbo build threads ... most of them have a list of parts they used.

Edit:Curse you 9krpmrx8 you beat me to it while I was building my post!!!!!

psychobeta604303 03-10-2011 03:38 PM

wow really?! Is this what asking for help entails? As I stated above, I have tried and tried to understand the lingo and what everyone is talking about. I did the research to try and find solutions for an sts kit, I have noticed that the other installs were still kinda foreign to me. I stated all this; however, it does not change the fact that I would like to have upgrades done to my car. I wanted to ask some of the people who may be able to basically help me put together a parts list so that I don't order something half cocked and end up out of budget and sitting on parts or a car pulled apart at a shop. I really didn't think that sincerely asking for help would be such a harsh task. Love thy fellow man huh lol. For those that could possibly help a lost soul, it would be appreciated. If you were lost in a city, country where you didn't speak the language and needed directions and advice where to go....would it not be nice for someone to lend a hand? Or would you just walk by and let the guy try to figure out a language he doesn't understand? Just askin to be safe than sorry. Don't mean to take all your time up by having you respond to these posts, but if you have the time and can help, I would be so thankful. Peace

wcs 03-10-2011 03:42 PM

Dude
I just skimmed that ugly wall of text in your post .... but I think I get the point.
Even if we built the list you need to understand the parts, I would think

Here read these threads .... put your learning hat on .... just like everyone has had too.

Dude, if had read the other remote mount threads you would understand that it requires much fabrication and skill as well as a good understanding of turbo systems, lubrication systems, etc.. You need a builder, not a mechanic. This would be a full on custom install.

alnielsen 03-10-2011 03:56 PM

Back in 2005 or 6, Squire was looking into building a complete kit for the RX8. It was dropped without us knowing why. It was assumed that the inability to tune the ecu was the problem. About a year ago, someone was approached and he considered it for a while. But they wanted his car for about 6 months as they tried to make a single and twin turbo version of the kit. That was too long for the loaner car to be away and they weren't going to cut much of a deal for the owner.
I believe someone said they were going to use a universal kit for the RX8, but I don't know if that ever went forward.

Brettus 03-10-2011 04:03 PM

Forget the remote mount idea . No proven track record ..............on here anyway.

You don't say where you are from - that may be a factor .

psychobeta604303 03-10-2011 04:21 PM

I am in Houston now and what I remember from when I had my first 8 was that the ecu was the biggest challenge for a turbo setup. I read results and some high dollar kits were not putting out enough power for the money. Torque as I read, has always been on the lower end and I can't even pretend I know how to explain it. I read quite a few remote mounts where they start off with the sts kit or similar and they make it seem like it would be easy to do; I know that it is only because they know what they are doing. When you know what you are doing, it makes it easier because any fabrication needed, could be accomplished easily. I am at the mercy of a shop that would specialize in this. I really like the sts setup because it is unique. If I was to get all silly and limitless income, I have had an appetite to have a rebuilt 20b installed. But I am being realistic with my pocket book. Maybe this is just me thinking out loud and seeing if by chance anyone could shed some light on my thoughts lol. I know for sure I want a turbo kit installed, whether I need to upgrade things like seals, clutch kits, injectors, bov, what ecu....etc. Crazy feeling to know what you want but not what you need to be included with it. If that makes sense.

bse50 03-10-2011 04:30 PM

Instead of asking for the parts you need why don't you just ask for a good shop that cuild make it happen?
Turblown has a nice turbo kit, BHR can do an install and they are both in AZ. I don't know much about texas though so i can't vouch for rotary performance.
The shop will tell you what is needed and will probably cut a deal. A decent turbo kit costs around 7000$+install fyi...

laythor 03-10-2011 04:35 PM

just spend some time reading the major horsepower section of the forum. it will answer most of your questions and give you a great starting point. Right now you're just coming off as one of thousands of people who have started "i want a turbo" threads.

It will take some time to read, but it is worth it

bumblebeerx8 03-10-2011 04:49 PM

i know someone who has done a rear mount. They did not start with a sts universal kit. The cost was close to a greddy kit with upgrades and its yet to be seen what it will do. If you can not do it yourself expect to pay what ever someone wants to make your dream real. It would be pointless to give you a list if you want a shop to do this. Why do you let them come up with a list if they are doing the work?

9krpmrx8 03-10-2011 04:56 PM

I think you are better off just giving turblown a call. Have your credit card number handy.

Chris 03-10-2011 04:57 PM

there are endless different paths you can go down with options. It would be hard for someone here to give you the "perfect list" as we all would most likely do something a little different.

you need:

turbo kit
rad
alc/meth kit
ign
gauges
some kind of tuning
patients
money

.... and most of all the drive/determination to learn more and more

Dude. I heard recently about this crazy dude who did a remount turbo kit in his RX-8, in his driveway, naked, with just a hammer and duct tape.

bumblebeerx8 03-10-2011 05:01 PM

well close carhartts in the winter, hammer yes, and blue painters tape to hold stuff together :biggthump
naked and duct tape would have just been showing off

Chris 03-10-2011 05:03 PM

I heard he did it naked with a hard on

bumblebeerx8 03-10-2011 05:07 PM

yeah no use of a jack to get the car off the ground just crawled under and got it up.

psychobeta604303 03-10-2011 05:09 PM

Yeah I have read quite of few posts and usually get lost. Especially when they have links to other threads and then that thread jumps you to another one and so forth lol. I would really like a remote mount in the rear of the vehicle. For some reason that looks really unique. You are right thoug, I should try to find a great shop here in the Houston area that can give me some Ideas. I am just afraid they may tell me I need this and that and try to rack up charges that are not necessary. Sorry bout all this I really have tried to follow along and pretend I knew what the other threads were saying. You talk cell phones and I can run with the best of em, but cars and tuning are just foreign....even though I would love to tune cars.

bumblebeerx8 03-10-2011 05:17 PM

You also have to concider supporting mods on top of just turbo componets even doing it myself i hit 5 figures in cost

So pretty much it would cost at least $10,000.00 + plus tuning costs.
