rear mount turbo project
well i have decided it is time for me to start a turbo project. I love the rx8 the way it sits and should have everything finished up as far as exterior and support mods soon, but i find myself wanting a little more. I looked into and tossed around the idea of a premade kit, custom top mount or manifold mount. In the end i came to i want to build my own kit just for the experience and rear mount because of space. I do not have any determined goals Ill be happy with any extra i achieve no matter how little or great it may be in the end.
I have the major parts sitting here at the house to get started and still have to buy a few thing and the ones that are unplanned for (bolts and fitting here and there). I do not have a estimated cost on the project because one its expensive to do it right and if i had it laying around and the girlfriend seen it she would think im even more nuts that she already think and puts up with. Now on to the build. I will be running a gt35r turbo. I have a china made one that was given to me to use for fabrication. I plan on buying one for turblown as the project progresses. I may stay with a journal bearing or go to a ball bearing. right now mine is a 82 hot side and plan to reduce to a 63. I have a v mount intercooler so not to block the radiator up front. 2.5" hotside and using the aem for the cold side with a little custom fabbing. synapse BOV with the option of a anti-stall kit (came as a package). All T bolt clamps and silicone couplers I will be using the turbo xs midpipe and exhaust (3") till the last flange and building from there. I also have the synapse 50mm wastegate and greddy profec B spec2. K&N filter and sock because it may be exposed to some of the elements being under the car (i never drive in the rain unless i get stuck) The oil i will be using a rb racing pump and 3/8 stainless tubing from a filtered relocation kit. then flex stainless lines with an fittings. also a greddy oil pan. I plan on getting the sohn adapter so i can try and get a few more miles out of a oil change due to the extra volume. Lastly I have a AP. i gladly happened to pick up before they got discontinued. I am debating on working with MM for a tune or a fourm member. I still need to get fuel injectors worked over and a fuel pump, also tossing around the idea of a return fuel system. then a snow stage 2 water/meth kit, wideband/boost gauge, and BOV WG plumbing Im not sure if ill need to run coolent lines back but that will be detrimed later on. This will be a slower build due to working 60 plus hours a week and not much daylight and only occasional weekends. Also a buddy of mine has to weld the aluminum as i do not have a AC welder. I may have a few questions through out the build mainly to confirm a set up. I have read may threads and asked question to the right people and am confident to tackle the project. |

Subscribing, I would like to try this type of turbo setup. There have been a couple of others that have tried going this route. I have always wondered if an intercooler would be necessary with all that pipe that is going from the rear to the front of the car.
|
The only member I have seen do a rear mount is talic and he is still working out small issues last I talked to him. From what I have read a intercooler is still need just a smaller core. There is a cooling effect under the car but not enough. I thought one would not be need either in the beginning. The hardest part which I still am not 100% sure about is Turbo sizing. The hot side must be smaller because of reduced exhaust tempature, but I have yet to find and rules or help on how much smallersmaller

one thing i have ran into is trying to place a hanger to support the turbo weight. I can drill through the trunk and bolt something, but i am trying to avoid that hoping the wastegate and exit side piping with the exhaust hangers will be enough.
|
I was considering building a frame work that used the 4 muffler exhaust hangers. I was also going to use PVC pipe to mock-up the line that would be the pressure feed.
|
We will see how this goes... subscribed, and best of luck...
|
Hmmm - the only person to do this successfully so far decided to improve it by mounting it where the cat goes . Tells you something ...............IMO

first I wanna say ... great idea and great project! Next, I am wondering how you are going to mount the think with keeping in mind that he entire assembly needs to be able to move as the car goes over bumps, your engine moves due to the torque it produces etc.
Bash me if you will, but the exhaust hangers are rubber and are designed to be flexible for this very reason. |
Yes I will utilize the rubber Exhaust hanger the only thing I may have to mount soild is the Turbo. I am tying to avoid any soild mounts if possible. I'm looking at adding another hook in the center to make another hanger with rubber in the center over the Turbo because that is truely all the weight.
|
what i did was made an h pattern utalizing the oem rubber hooks
it allows the whole exahust and turbo to move together and doesnt hit the aluminum shielding under the trunk i just got back and catching up to the real world from a month out in afghanistan untill i get flowing back in i cant tidy up mine to send pictures also im 63 on hot side and 70 on cold its crazy cfm at 5,500 and full boost around 4200ish but im still getting help from MM to bring it down between my ebc and tune same as above videos and sound bites to come ps sorry for thread stealing just throwing in my 2 cents |
Oh no problem talic. I did use 2 of the hangers for the Turbo. I will use the other 2 for the wastegate side and exhaust tip and the exit side and tip. Ill work on it a bit today before I go out of town for the weekend.

Wouldn't it just be easier to work with a STS turbo setup?
|
Sure if they made one. It wouldn't do much good to buy a kit for another car and modify it in fact that would be totally worthless. A turbo that is not sized for the car, fabrication that is worthless. Plus doing all the Fab work is a breeze its what I do for a living as a pipe fitter.
|
They make a universal kit. However, it may not come with everything needed to customize it to the car.

I have always loved this idea, good luck. I followed the first thread on this as well (rotorocks?)

well with school and work an vacation i have not even touched the car. I have been concidering a bit of a redesign to get the turbo higher and a cleaner look. I have been looking into buying the final turbo. talic is running a china made gt35 journal bearing .63/.70 and is seein full spool around 4200. Im looking at a BB gt35r .63/.70 or a turbonetics gt35r (they claim more power and faster spool by 25%) i have not seen confimed data though. also looking at the turbonetics 62-1 with stage 5 wheel .63/.70. i want to keep a 2.5 outlet/4" inlet compressor and 4 bolt 3" exit/t3 inlet. im only looking for full spool around 3600-3800 and good flow. has anyone had an experiences with any of these. here are some maps
|
well got layed off from work so ill have some time to work on this. I reworked the piece i made to put the turbo higher off the ground. Next will be cutting the pipe in and running it to the driver side exhust tip.
