Insurance for FI RX-8?

So, I've been making modifications for some time on my 8, and have GEICO insurance. As I've been making mods I have been calling in and updating my records so that the modifications will be covered. I didn't have any issues or complaints after adding most of the modifications ($10,000+ worth), but when I added the turbocharger, exhaust, and brakes they refused to cover it. What insurance do you other FI guys use? If my car gets totalled or stolen I'm screwed, so I'm looking for coverage that allows modified high performance vehicles. Any suggestions?

Im sure Progressive will cover you, you should call and ask. and Statefarm might do it too. but its going to be expensive.

Geico does not cover major engine modifications. Even if you tell them. in fact I think most insurance companies wont cover them. Cuz who knows if you install it right, and if your car blows up and even take you with it ... its a huge risk for insurance companies.

As for Exhaust, they should cover it (assume you took pictures of you installing it and reciepts that you paid for it)

Brakes hmm ... I guess they dont cover stuff that might impair the safety of the car. same as engines.

American Family Insurance covers modifications. You just need to stipulate them and provide a list of "worth" for each mod. they also have great rates...I switched to them from Geico...best thing I've ever done...Geico Sucks...and they sucks when covering accidents also...I feel like they are borderline scammers.

^Apparently not, blackenedwings said Geico won't cover him anymore with the turbo installed. I left Geico also and went to USAA.

Geico dropped me because of my mods, and I too listed them all on the policy and they were cool with it for a year or so but then it came to renew the policy they wouldn't do it because of the mods. I was mad but it wasn't worth the time to fight it, I now have progressive and they haven't given me any problems.

Unless USAA is relaxing the rules, USAA membership is only allowed to current/prior military and their children. If you can qualify though, it is by far the best to go with. Great service, hands down best rates around. I pay $193 a month for full coverage on myself, my wife, my 8, and her Mazda5, living in the middle of the city, and although off public record, they know about my dozens of tickets in the past.

But yeah, I have 0 complaints with them over 12 years as a member, and I do all my insurance (home/auto), banking, loans, credit, etc through them.

I have USAA also. Where do you go about adding Mod's to the policy? Do you have to call or do it online? I've had USAA for about 2 years now and never have spoken to a person yet their website is so easy to use.

No idea. No mods to add yet, probably just call them.

Yeah, Progressive is great. I've only had one claim, it didn't go too smoothly at first, but after I called and bitched some people out they got it taken care of right away and cut me a fair check quickly.

But their rates are great. The only bad thing is they won't cover aftermarket parts over $10,000 (Meaning they only cover the first $10k in parts), so yeah I'm maxed out. And they require receipts for everything, which I have most of, but I buy most parts online and such, so it's a crap shoot.

I am currently researching to see if any other car insurer will cover of $10k in parts, but I doubt it. It's probably some lame industry standard.

When I talked to them today they didn't give me any issues about $10k in parts. I'm at $20k+ in parts and they included it on the policy no problem. They came up with a "combined total value" for the car + the mods and said if I had any further modifications to call up and add the cost. They did ask about the receipts, but thats not too hard as most of my stuff I have receipts for. The Progressive woman was like "well, what modifications do you have?" I was like, "I have modified suspension, exhaust, engine, exterior, interior... um... pretty much everything." She asked if I had a "lip kit" and then some of the specific mods I had, then said she didn't see anything that violated their terms.

That's odd since they wouldn't let me do more than $10k in parts. Maybe is was an Arizona state thing. The policy maybe different now that I moved, so I will check again. It may vary by state.

Yes, it does vary by state, and they have people who are licensed to handle the various states and to know the rules for a policy for that state, so you should defnitely check your current state. I know they didn't blink twice when I added $20,000 in mods onto the value of the car in MD.

Progressive rocks.
My insurance has been steadily going down every few months. I'm paying about $100 a month for full coverage and $100 deductibles.
I have a separate "replacement cost" rider for the aftermarket stuff. $180 a year.

I have my insurance with State Farm....They cover the libility like everyone else but required that I take a direct replacement policy on the car it self. The only problem they had was requireing me to go to my agent and having the ground clearance measured.

I switched from Citizens (here in Michigan) to Progressive. My agent was pissed. She claims that they checked all the insurance companies and Citizens was always working out to offer the best deal for the same coverage (and I had been using this organization since 1991 when I moved to the state from Ohio). I increased some of our coverages with Progressive, and it still dropped by enough that when I bought my RX-8, adding it to our policy (which includes a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX w/ Leather and a 2005 Mazda3s) resulted in the same 6 month rate that we were paying for just the two vehicles under Citizens! Clearly I was getting raped by my "independent" agent, who was supposed to be working on my behalf, not Citizens.

We recently had a chance to file a claim with Progressive (I was always happy with Citizens in this regard) when someone smashed into our Odyssey on the side of the road on the expressway. My wife and I were both very happy with the way Progressive handled the case.

On a bad note, I just had the 6 month renewal for Progressive a little while ago, and our rates when up by about $25/month. Not too happy about that. Nothing changed on our record (no new tickets, etc.), other than that claim, which was covered by the other guy's insurance. Still, no reason to change for a while. I've been told that you should shop around for new insurance every 1 to 2 years because insurance companies will often not lower your rates, or even increase them, after they give you a cheap rate initially to win you over. Of course, this price shopping service is what our agent was *supposed* to be doing for me. Bitch.
