Hydraulic release bearing

I've heard good and bad things about Hydraulic release bearings, but never actually had a chance to use them. I just took my tranny out and desided to ask if any of you guys have used them and what are your thoughts. Anything you have experienced would be great to know.

I know where you can get one that bolts on the S1 6 spd, it wasn’t available back then, but he had a 600+ hp 3-rotor so pretty sure it didn’t have the RX8 trans. For a standard type clutch it probably needs a larger 3/4” bore master cylinder. I probably would say don’t bother unless you’re planning to use a 7.25” or smaller race clutch. They have a lot shorter throw and can use the factory slave cylinder with it.

Will it fit a jdm 5 speed trannie? My shifting hasn’t been smooth with the REW engine and Civic slave cylinder on neither the S2 trannie my S1 car came with or the jdm 5 speed I currently have and prefer. So I’m considering trying out a dual disc setup with hydraulic slave cylinder.

No, you can use one from the FD3 though for that trans. Spec sells one, but it’s intended to be used with their 7.25” twin mini-clutch. I spoke to them about it some.

Yes, we offer the FD hydraulic bearing kit for push mini twin, pn SZ49MT.
You won’t find any info online. Just call them.

Some pictures

Thanks for the pics and clarification, I was actually considering that Spec mini it seems to be the cheapest at about $1299 , how much is the hydraulic bearing ?
Maybe Quarter Master clutch
The Rx-8 JDM 5 Speed trannie is based off the Rx-7 FD 5 Speed so I guess it makes sense other than that that car has a pull type clutch..
I currently have a Spec 3+ with a Fidanza Flyhweel and a new friction insert i put in with the new clutch over 5000 miles ago and works just fine never slipped, some dislike Spec clutches..

I don’t know the cost because at the time I was just trying to find something to fit the 6spd trans, but figured out that the 5spd input nose cover was different between the time I asked them the question and they replied. I also couldn’t find it listed online at all. So you’re either going to need to contact them or one of their distributors for that. Likely just ask whoever has the best clutch price you can find how much for that part number. Please let me know if you buy one. I have some questions about it because eventually I’ll buy one too for a 5-spd with dogbox gearset I’m sitting on.

I called SPEC and talked to Danny in Tech support and he said they don’t even make hydraulic for the mini twin for the Rx-8 and it’s designed to use with the oem throwout bearing, so this probably wouldn’t solve my issue not engaging smoothly, and they raised the prices a few months ago. I see one for about $1270 on ebay it seems like a legit seller..
I read the topic of the 6 speed 8 trannie with REW block and someone said they shortened the slave cyclinder rod and works better. I’d like to try a twin disc clutch and see how it works out for “daily street” driving and make my own opinion but I don’t want to it wear out in 10,000 miles so I dunno..
The same SPEC 3+ clutch and Fidanza flyhwheel i have now on the 5 speed and REW fits the same as it did on my previous S2 6 speed and also previously S1 trannie all 3 mated to the REW, what do you mean the 5 speed input nose cover is different and what does that affect ?
I changed the Input shaft seals on both S2 and 5 speed trannies, S2 is simple 4 bolts and on the 5 speed is a pain having to remove the bellhousing, applying thin layer of RTV then very quickly re assembling. Input seal is the same as an FD’s and whats odd is that it’s a smaller diameter than the Rx-8’s you would figure it would be thicker not thinner..

you’re not paying attention

they don’t make one for the RX8 6 spd trans

putting the 5 spd in essentially makes it equivalent to an FD3 RX7 as far as the clutch and neutral balanced flywheel with auto counterweight is concerned.

that includes the hydraulic release too

you started this thread specifically for the hydraulic release. Rebuilding your trans and clutches not related to that should be posted somewhere else.

here’s another FD version that should work on the RX8 5-spd, bit pricey though 895 AUD / $627 USD on the date of this post

https://shop.promaz.com.au/product-p...h-slave-fd.htm

they also sell a billet steel bellhousing for same 5-spd transmission now to replace the old, clunky scattershield; only 29 lbs, but not cheap

https://shop.promaz.com.au/product-p/bellhousing.htm

and if you want to stiffen the 5-spd case up

https://shop.promaz.com.au/product-p/box-brace-rx-7.htm

I ended up getting the Spec mini twin D-Trim but they don’t offer the hydraulic bearing so I am using oem master and slave and it works perfectly, not too bad to street either, pedal feel is stiff *** hell especially going from a Spec 3+ which was very soft. I adjusted the pedal throw almost all the way down to the metal for a short push as stated by a Spec tech to not push the diaphragm in too far.
How can the Rx-8 5 speed tran essentially make it a pull type clutch, it’s still push type.
One thing I noticed over and over again with different clutches is that the usual provided throwout bearings unmarked brand, seem to be thicker long wise than a Koyo throwout bearing giving them more throw/ push so I went with the provided bearing rather Koyo like previously and clutch is working perfect. I think my poor gear engaging issue was from using the civic type slave cylinder with the other AT rear iron engine.

Are you running their sintered iron disc's or high performance organic discs?

they don’t offer the FD3 hydraulic release any more, or you still don’t understand that it’s straight bolt-on for RX8 5 speed trans?

because the 5-spd was never sold in the USDM and they don’t know, but I was working under the idea that’s what you wanted since you bumped this old thread for that purpose. Maybe it will be efit somebody, some day ...

those look like organic discs
