Greddy install build-Adaptronic

Just wanted to share my RX-8 buildup and catalogue the events good and bad. Typical Greddy turbo kit install minus the e-manage add some bits and remove some bytes. I picked up this used Greddy kit (minus e-manage) off kijiji in Montreal from a guy who no longer had the 8 and couldn't manage the install when he had it. I was flying there for work from Toronto and I literally picked it up from the guy and packaged it in my hotel room and shipped it back as checked baggage.

• Greddy TD06 turbo, manifold and down pipe
• Piping intercooler and couplers
• Sandwich oil plate with braided line
• Tial BOV with V-band
• AEM wideband gauge and O2
• AEM temp gauge for coolant
• Adaptronic Plug-In Select ECU
• Adaptronic SSI box for optional signals in Adaptronic fuel sensor
• Adaptronic electric boost controller
• Lo-tek center gauge pod (gaugepods.com)
• New ATP 0.50 bar waste gate
• Titanium heat wrap for down pipe
• Gold reflect tape for down pipe area on car body
• Greddy MM fix #2 for boost source to wastegate

Stumbling along with the install in my garage using jackstands, a couple long nights but getting ½ way there (no rush). I’m fairly good with mechanical stuff in my own opinion and own a lot of tools from my past profession; that being said, this is a real challenge for one person lying on their back. ........I'm learning a lot and reading a lot here on the forum. I’m not a big social media/internet guy so this build thread will be short. The plan is to run 9psi, stock injectors and new stock coils just to see how it goes. Then a tune in the spring by thewird.

As the car sits now
BB 2005 GT, R3 sides, MS wing, appearance package front and rears, jdm fog with switch, 10” sub box and amp, DNA exhaust, gutted cat, HSD coilovers, racingbeat end links, 9.5" +35 te37 reps, stock tires stretch. Summer driven and polished always.......

Will be adding as I go.... wish me luck.......

turbo installed, now the challenge.... tighten the bolts. I'm guessing I might have to massage the down pipe area. this kit barely fits...... really surprising how Greddy managed this one...

yurcivicsux 09-16-2015 02:17 PM

more pics and updates to follow. next is to install the wastegate with no room.... how is this possible? anyone have any tool tips for this job? same with the down pipe nuts at in upper back.....

maybe eventually.... I don't have the sensor for the ssi box yet and I don't know enough about it. also we have limited amounts of E85 at gas stations in Ontario. would be cool though.
The adaptronic ecu sells itself with all the support and the innovation. so excited to to get it all functioning.......

I always had the WG actuator already attached when installing . It is possible to get it on with turbo in there but like you have found out ............ extremely difficult.
For the downpipe bolts you need a really ....... really long 3/8" extension .

9krpmrx8 09-16-2015 02:39 PM

You should have put some heat shielding on the firewall. It's not too late, do it. Trust me.

Brettus 09-16-2015 02:43 PM

9k is right ......... unless you enjoy the smell of burning carpet that is .
I ran a removable heat shield that wrapped around the turbine housing.

yurcivicsux 09-16-2015 02:46 PM

right now I have the down pipe and the lower fire wall protected. I will pick up some more reflectagold for the whole fire wall then and put it all over everywhere as high as I can go. I want this install right from the get-go... thanks guys.

TeamRX8 09-16-2015 03:02 PM

gold tape and heat shielding are not the same thing

needs a better intake pipe/filter too ...

^ this. That tape will last about a month. Maybe. After that it will melt the plastic support under the carpet, the carpet, and your passengers shoes,

I made a heat shield (see my build thread) and installed a turbo blanket (a PTP one from a Genesis fit perfect) and wrapped the down pipe and finally my passenger side floor doesn't get toasted.

Oh and mine burnt and was hammered out of the way quite a bit. If you didn't do any hammering then it will be even worse.

I understand the difference......

also yes I agree the filter is just sitting on the rad fan cover, (dumb) I will extend this through the hole to pull in cooler -air already on my list.

TeamRX8 09-16-2015 03:29 PM

now you do ....

BigBadChris 09-16-2015 03:31 PM

There are also specially made intakes to add to the greddy, or you can mod something up.

Lots of people use AEM to get a decent maf setup/cold air intake . But seeing as you aren't maf tuning you can get away with something more ............. agricultural , like the Greddy air NX.

okay.....
cool thanks i was also thinking i would diy a extended intake pipe with 2 elbows just to get it away from the rad fan.

He's on MAP, just vent to atmosphere and order without the recirc fitting.

9krpmrx8 09-17-2015 09:02 AM

Yeah well he bought the recirculating TIAL BOV so I assume he intends to use it.

yurcivicsux 09-17-2015 02:28 PM

planning on re-circulating for as I feel there are too many guys driving around here in hatch-backs making swoosh noises. Kind of ruins the exclusivity of FI. guy buys a Genesis bolts on RFL blitz bov and drives around making car sneezes... played out.... again no reason I can't upgrade/ change later same with everything else on this build.

sort of overwhelming all the things that I can upgrade or change to be better. for now just want to get it started and put together for storage over the winter. spring/ next year is when the fun starts...

I sometimes feel I must be crazy to do such a project and spend the money considering the other options for vehicles and my how nice my current daily driver is.

yurcivicsux 09-17-2015 02:30 PM

My recirculation hose is only like 3" long as the pipes pass across each other almost can't see it.

That's good, it should be short and direct. That TIAL QR is nice unit. My comment was about the one sold by a liar linked above as the placement of the fitting makes no sense to me since is faces towards the front bumper so the hose has to be routed in a "U" shape (well that's the way most who have it run it) back to the BOV or DV on the C6 pipe.

RotaryMachineRx 09-18-2015 11:45 AM

Good luck with build man, the pics reminds me of when I did mine solo off jack stands in my garage! Looks like you have the hard part completed in getting that turbo in there but you should have installed it with the actuator in place!

And Brett's right, I found the skinniest ratchet extension set I could at Princess Auto. Was the only way I could possibly get a socket on the DP to turbo connections without it slipping!

yurcivicsux 09-20-2015 06:47 PM

worked 3 straight days on this, and is finally together. i will post up some progress pics tomorrow.

now complete
-removed turbo again to install actuator (thanks Greddy instructions) this actually was terrible to have to start almost over again. really poor instructions. new ATP waste-gate actuator is too big 59mm, compared to 54.... won't fit. will tackle this in the spring maybe....
-charge piping/ bumper trimming etc.... used hairspray and cleaned all couplers with brake cleaner. previous owner never ran catch can and all the piping wake caked with oil.
-FMIC
-cleaned and painted all rusty dirty spots (canada eh... whatta gone doo)
-check valve for jet air vac line
-oil catch can
-removed rusty oil pan/ cleaned/ sanded and painted- drilled hole for return line
-lost the upper strut nuts.... trip to dealership to get 3 of these

left to do.....
-install oil pan with new high temp sealant
-heat wrap return line
-fabricate NASA style heat shield for down pipe area
-lotek gauge cluster
-wiring of gauges
-install and find location for fuel pressure sensor
-install and find location for coolant temp sensor
-wiring of AEM O2 wideband to adaptronic ssi box
-plug in ECU adaptronic
-obtain base map and install

keep the positive comments coming.....

yup thanks... i used 3 really long extensions also from princess auto. i also die ground the bolt areas around the nuts to properly fit a ratchet in there surprising what -1mm of clearance can do to help.

glad the previous owner go it right then... short and sweet. read through most of your build thread (so long and so many comments) really done well.... congrats... clean.

Whoa whoa whoa... lets not bring the whole country down. That's an eastern Canadian problem, we don't get the rusts out here! :)

An yeah BOV signal line goes to Vfad nipple just behind TB... The way you are describing the vacuum hoses sounds right but I threw some pics in Brettus' thread years ago that should help you out.

Otherwise; good stuff dude!

yurcivicsux 09-20-2015 08:40 PM

i think i got the yellow and white mixed up... will switch this around tomorrow. also surprisingly i don't have a lot of rust considering it's a Mazda, oil sprayed and only summer driven for the last 4 years. you still get a bit here and there in some areas under the battery tray....all cleaned up now.

funny a buddy of mine asked who has a turbo 8... my response was "a guys in SK with a yellow one" don't know of anyone else yet.... at least they aren't coming to the meet ups around Toronto...

where is this vac line at the back of the throttle....?? my eyes start to get sore from all the reading on this forum.... maybe you can link a quick thread or pic?

easily half the work involved for the build..... keeping up with the posts here.... part of the fun i guess....although sometimes too many conflicting opinions and ways to do things can be confusing...

RotaryMachineRx 09-20-2015 08:55 PM

Yeah I actually mixed mine up at first and I was driving around with it like that for a while but that was just on a base tune and I wasn't hitting any boost before I noticed; didn't hurt anything.

I don't have a picture because I'm way up north for work right now, but right behind the TB on the driver side there is a nipple (part of the manifold) that is part of the stock air intake VFAD system,
You would of had to remove a hose off it to remove the stock intake, it is pointing straight down towards the ground. Directly behind the driver side bottom corner of the TB

It's like directly behind where the coolant hoses go into the TB.

I hope that doesn't leak. Boost/vacuum leaks are a bitch. Lookin' good man.

yurcivicsux 09-21-2015 11:36 AM

concerned about how the adptronic ECU sits open in the engine bay. I know a few guys are using these is moister a concern? just thinking about what would happen if it got wet for whatever reason. as you know the harness is exposed.

will do some searching........

I know I'm also concerned might put some glue or hairspray inside the fitting or use fuel line clamps instead of gear clamps. the main one is where it connects to the LIM apparently there is no barb there and I can't reach it. maybe I will get lucky as it's an 2005 the line might be 'stuck' on pretty good as rubber lines sometimes get.

The ECU cover fits with the Adaptronic, you just have to move some things around in the ECU box.

I don't believe the check valve is even required if you are connecting it to the C6 charge pipe like that (flow will always be going from charge pipe to LIM no matter what as LIM will have higher vacuum and lower boost than charge pipe at all times).... I don't have one at least and it would eliminate 2 potential leaks, but the worm gear clamps should be plenty to hold that on and prevent any leaks.

As for the connections on the jet air to the LIM.... I didn't put any extra clamps on mine either and I've been going 5 years strong without an issue (knock on wood).

doesn't hurt I guess, at least I can say it's there to prevent any boost leak back into C6 (charged pipe). for $5 I'll keep it.....

9krpmrx8 09-21-2015 02:17 PM

Yeah if you use quality vacuum hose (and not just any silicone hose advertised as vacuum hose) it should not come off but I still use zip ties anyway. And yeah I have my jet air to the intake and nothing on the C6 pipe.

yurcivicsux 09-21-2015 02:25 PM
And yeah I have my jet air to the intake and nothing on the C6 pipe.
interesting I would have thought for sure you would need a check valve as in theory it makes sense.

I do have a check valve (OEM RX-8 one) on the jet air line between it and the intake.

Yeah the check valve is needed if you route it back to the intake, because then when the LIM has boost the intake doesn't meaning boost leak. But if it is connected to the charge pipe it is not required as the charge pipe ALWAYS has a greater pressure than the LIM, in vacuum and boost so there is never reverse flow through the jet air hose. As you stated though.... your check valve isnt hurting anything whatsoever as long as you put it in so flow is going towards the LIM!

I was able to get my to fit just fine, just had to remove the brackets. I put some foam spacers between the ECU's so some air flow would go between them and the would not jumble about in the box. I was even able to keep the inlet duct even though the adaptronic instructions say to get rid of it.

On another note, let me know how that SSI works out for you. I plan on doing that same mod myself some day.
