Anyone See the Pettit SC Car at Road America This Weekend?
They were at the track on Saturday before the ALMS race, anybody see or drive the car?

they had stuff on it at the corral, but no firm release dates. Cam said it actually was decent on fuel, hes getting about teh same hwy MPG as I do, and I still have the whole N/A bit.

apparently according to Cam the Emanage forces teh ECU into open loop by disabling the temp sensor. So he was running the EManage with "bandaid" fixes. Yep, it disables the temp sensor. And with our engine being as delicate with overheating as it is....

I spoke with Cam last week and told him about the Mazsport ECU and our own Megasquirt project.
He knows they are out there, but is still searching for a simple plug and play solution from unichip. They really want a kit for people who just want bolt and go.
I told him that if I had the money, I'd just buy his blower and the Mazsport ECU and go to town, if your really interested in it I think they will sell the hardware sans management to you if you have anyother ECU solution.

I personally am not an eManage fan but then again I don't like piggyback systems. I like standalones. The Interceptor ecu is kind of a hybrid. It controls the important parts such as tuning and lets the factory ecu control other things. This way is just as good and for all intents and purposes is a true standalone. That system or others like it get my vote.

The Interceptor is just a Microtech ecu. It can control it if you hook it up. I don't think they did. My Megasquirt project can even control knock retard if I hook it up. I'm not going to hook it up though as I intend to just tune the car good so I don't need it. If you do everything right in tuning on a nonturbo rotary, it is extrememly hard to even make it ping, even on purpose! That takes talent in tuning if Mazda felt a nonturbo car needed it.

Actually there is more to it "RG", but it is based on proven reliable Microtech technology. Just FYI the Interceptor is being shipped with an additional input to work with our knock sensor setup. I agree that the margin for error (introducing detonation) is quite abit less when tuning an N/A. I agree completely if it's tuned right you do not need a knock system. Scott

Thank you. When we spoke the morning after the original "Finally a plug and play ECU" post you had a"thats what I was thinking" tone to your questions. Maybe you should buy one, dial it in and look like "A Rotary God" There is no doubt in my mind you could have excellent results with a little hands on.Scott

I have no doubt I could get some very nice results with your system. For what it does, I don't feel that the price is unreasonable for it, especially when people are willing to spend that much on intakes and exhausts combines only to get a fraction of what it can give you. Definitely get it done on a nonturbo as there are many people looking at that benefit. Just from playing with the Megasquirt the small amount that I have, I can tell there is alot of things I would change over the factory system. I don't really care who does it. I just want someone to show the results. Keep up the good work!
On a side note, are you going to go out to Sevenstock in October?

Yeah, what are the numbers on the Pettit s/c kit. I live like 30-40 mins from his shop so if the numbers are right, s/c + interceptor-x = megafun! I'll definitely get the interceptor-x if Cam comes up big with his kit.

Surely the knock sensor is a good fail safe should something go wrong (bad fuel for example). Even the best tuned car in the world could go 'out of tune' due to external influences/factors not expected by the driver?

The knock sensor is good to have on a car using forced induction. I've never owned a rotary car with a knock sensor and I've never had a problem. The RX-8 is the first nonturbo rotary car to come out with a knock sensor on it but the tuning is so lousy that it needs it. Knock has never been an issue with non forced inducted rotaries and it shouldn't be. You're not talking bs as it is a valid concern. Too many people are putting too much value in it's importance though. With forced induction it is important but if you aren't going this route don't worry about it.
Just to give an example of why I don't care to bother with them, on a non turbo rotary engine as long as you have a timing split of at least 10 degrees or more, you will not detonate. I can run this split on low octane fuel and advance the timing really far past 30 degrees advance until the power starts falling off really hard and it still won't ping! If I run a closer split and try to get too greedy on running too lean, to the point it isn't making good power anymore, it can ping. Luckily this is almost never fatal on a non turbo rotary. Not saying it is absolutely impossible but I've never once seen an issue from it on a non turbo.
If you don't have forced induction just get it tuned right. If it is tuned right, you do have a little buffer zone for bad gas. The range where your car runs really nice is not so close to the extremes that this will make a difference in terms of ping. Maybe a little power though. I have always run 87 octane in rotaries and always will if that tells you anything. If I were using a turbo, I'd use a knock sensor and high octane. It all depends on your intended use.
